The emergence of online shopping in India represents one of the most significant transformations in the country’s retail landscape. Driven by the swift expansion of internet access and the widespread use of smartphones, e-commerce has emerged as a powerful force. It changed the way that Indian customers buy products and services, which aided in its growth and appeal.
Companies like Flipkart, Snapdeal, and Amazon quickly established themselves as major players in e-commerce. They offer an extensive range of things, ranging from grocery and household goods to fashion and technology.

While e-commerce comes with so many advantages, one of the driving forces behind the rise of online shopping in India is the convenience it offers. Thanks to e-commerce, customers can buy from the comfort of their homes, bypassing the traffic and congestion of physical businesses. However, in spite of its expansion, online shopping in India has been plagued by issues including infrastructural and logistical limitations. Additionally, issues of fraud and counterfeit products are also increasing day by day.
It might frustrate customers to the core who think they’re getting an excellent deal online. This recently became a reality for one man who thought he was purchasing a brand-new laptop for Rs. 1 lakh, only to find himself with a pre-owned model instead. Feeling outraged, a man posted a video on ‘X’ detailing his ordeal and providing proof to support his claim. His video soon went viral and even got Amazon’s attention.
A man posted a video of a scam happening on Amazon online shopping
An X user named Rohan Das recently posted a video on X, formerly known as Twitter, about how he got scammed by Amazon while purchasing a laptop. According to him, he purchased a Lenovo laptop from Amazon on April 30 and received it on May 7. However, when he looked up the warranty term on Lenovo’s official website, he saw that it had begun in December 2023. It meant the laptop had already been used.

He also advised viewers to proceed with utmost caution while making purchases on the platform. Captioning the post, he wrote,
“I Was Scammed By Amazon! @amazonIN selling used products as new. Today I received a “new” laptop from Amazon, but it had already been used and the warranty started in December 2023. @Lenovo @Lenovo_in”

The post received a lot of attention right away and many comments from other people. While many people called it a cheating, others raise suspicions about warranty error from Lenovo’s side.
@AmitAgarwal and your company should be ashamed for selling used products to customers and not prioritizing my issue. Your team promised to reach out within 12 hours, but it’s been over 17 hours with no call or email from your company.

@amazonIN Do you resell the laptops you have already sold to the customers? Is this not dangerous from the security point of view? How can a customer trust you like this?

Bhai I have purchased a hp laptop offline from an authorised store I have the same issue with them when I asked them they told me the warranty will be from the invoice date. Because this warranty is as per date of manufacturing which is showing. Please share your thoughts

Once we bought a new piece from Lenovo store. Same issue. Warranty started few months ago already. Went to the store. They said upon import, the warranty commences but writing to Lenovo warranty commence from invoice date. Try writing to Lenovo.

How did Amazon react to the whole controversy?
Upon seeing the situation getting out of hand, Amazon responded with an apology and requested further details about the situation. In their reply to the above-mentioned post, they wrote,
“We’re sorry for the unpleasant experience regarding your issue with the product that you have received. Please share your details here: https://amzn.to/4dvxkZF, and we’ll get back to you within 6-12 hours. -Sumit”
However, furious at the whole mess, Rohan told them to quickly solve the situation aggressively.

Stop talking nonsense and quickly take back your used laptop, and issue me a refund within 2 hours because I need to order another new laptop.

While many users reprimanded Amazon for whatever happened, some of them recommended contacting Lenovo directly.
What Lenovo has to say about the overall controversy around warranty?
On the controversy, Lenovo also released an official response, which stated,
“Hello there, We maintain the machine’s manufacture date in our database; however, the real warranty begins on the day of the customer purchase date, & we manually update it after sharing a Bill invoice copy.”

However, this is not the first time customers have been scammed on Amazon. From time to time, we heard how Amazon delivered faulty products. These issues are occasionally resolved, but occasionally there are still issues that need to be resolved.
