Major DP Singh Story

Since the time immemorial our society has witnessed innumerable people who proved themselves as real fighters to the entire world. Under any adverse conditions they didn’t chose to give up and hence today they are respected role models for us. Many say that talents are god gifted and everything is destined but there’s so many people out there who inspite of being provided with ample of opportunities cannot make a nickel change in their lives. Likewise there are so many strong and determined souls out there who inspite of all the hardships, inspite of the social controversies and continuous demoralising environment turn their dreams into reality.

So, today I am going to mention about fifteen such personalities who made it loud and clear that inspite of physical challenges a person can still achieve his or her goals.

1. Ira Singhal

She is the first ever women to top IAS exam in general category given that she has scoliosis. She cracked the civil service exam in 2010 but due to her medical history she was denied a post. But this didn’t kill her determination and again she reappeared for the exams in 2014 and acquired the first position in the country.

2. Girish Sharma

He lost one of his legs in a train accident only at the age of two. But this didn’t break his spirit and hence he took badminton professionally at the age of sixteen. He not only participated in Asian Paralympics Cup but also won gold medal. And in 2015 he came second in both singles and doubles for para badminton players.

3. Sai Prasad Vishwanathan

He is the first differently abled Indian who mastered the art of skydiving. He lost sensation in the lower part of his body when he was just a child. His name is also there in Limca Book of records to skydive from a height of 14000 feet despite of such physical condition. He is also a co-founder of Sahasra, an organisation that provides scholarships to the economically backward students.

4. Malathi Krishnamurthy Holla

She suffered paralysis at a very young age and her lower body is completely disabled. Even after going through so much medical surgeries and constantly failing she won over 400 medals in various athletic events both at national and international levels. Even at the age of 60 she is the fastest female disabled Indian athlete.

5. Arunima Sinha

She lost her leg in a train accident and yet became the first female amputee to climb Mt. Everest. Before the tradegy she was a national level volleyball player. She has also been awarded with Padma Shri and she determines to wave our national flag on all the highest peaks.

6. Deepa Malik

She was diagnosed with spinal tumour and soon enough her lower body was completely paralysed. But despite of such conditions she became the first female Indian athlete to win a medal in Paralympics and also turned out to be an all rounder who excelled in swimming, biking, shot put, discus and javelin throw. She was also awarded with the prestigious Arjuna Award.

7. Bharat Kumar

He was born with one hand and it barely crippled his mindset. He belonged to a very economically backward class and yet he learnt swimming. And he won more than 50 medals in para swimming contests.

8. Kamlesh Patel

At an age of 5 his both legs were paralysed due to wrong treatment. He always wanted to become a dancer and after several rejections he finally appeared in the talent show Dance India Dance in 2009. He is a successful dancer now and has won million hearts.

9. Major DP Singh

He served in army and at an age of 25 he was injured in the Kargil war. His right leg is amputated but this didn’t kill his enthusiasm for becoming a runner. He is India’s first Blade runner and at the age of 44 he is now a marathoner and and a motivational speaker.

10. Subhreet Kaur Ghumman

She is a one legged dancer and she lost her leg in a motorbike accident. She first appeared in the show India’s Got Talent and proved that nothing can really stop a person if one is truly dedicated to his or her goals.

11. Mariyappan Thangavelu

Due to a road accident he became permanently disabled at the age of 5. He became the first ever Indian to win a gold medal in Paralympics high jump. He also became World’s No 1 Paralympic in 2015.

12. Ankur Dhama

He lost his eyesight only at the age of 6 and became India’s first blind athlete to participate in Paralympics in thirty years. He won many national and international championships. He started training from a small age and participated in Asian Para Games in 2014 where he won two bronzes and one silver.

13. Rajendra Singh Rahelu

He fall a victim to polio when he was just eight months old. Spending his life on a wheelchair he became really determined to become a powerlifter. He received his first title in 1997 in Punjab Open Meet followed by a bronze medal in 2004 in Summer Paralympics Athens and then a silver at the Commonwealth Games 2014 all for powerlifting. In 2006 he received Arjuna Award.

14. Malvika Iyer

At the age of 13 she fall prey to a grenade explosion which left her legs paralysed and ripped her forearms. Today she is a PhD scholar and also a international motivation speaker. She is also awarded by Nari Shakti Puraskar by our very President Ram Nath Kovind in this March.

15. Sudha Chandran

She lost her leg in an accident when she was 16. Now she is a very famous Bharatanatyam dancer who is well known for both dancing and acting. She is a master in the field of dancing and has also won many awards.
