S. Jaishankar was born in Delhi on January 9, 1955. His father was a renowned civil servant, Krishnaswamy Subrahmanyam. He studied at Delhi’s Air Force School and Bangalore’s Military School. He completed his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Delhi’s St. Stephen’s College. Jaishankar also has an MBA degree in political science, and an M.Phil. and PhD from Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).

He is also a linguist and can speak Russian, English, Tamil, Hindi, conversational Japanese, Chinese, and a little Hungarian.
