Controversies about public figures are not uncommon, even in the world of Indian cricket. The recent Shikhar Dhawan divorce case made headlines and sparked arguments, but there is another cricketer who is making the news for all the wrong reasons. He is none other than fast bowler Mohammad Shami. He is involved in several legal entanglements including some personal allegations by his estranged wife Hasin Jahan, who worked as a model and cheerleader in the IPL. They also have a daughter together.

The twisted love story of Shami and Hasin Jahan

Controversies in Shami’s life started after he got married to model Hasin Jahan. Jahan’s marriage with Shami was her second marriage, she was previously married and had two daughters from her previous marriage.

Reports suggest that Hasin Jahan introduced her daughters as her sisters to Shami during their marriage. But later Shami admitted to being aware of the situation in an interview, he also added that he chose to accept the girls and proceed with the wedding.

Their marriage was short-lived

After their marriage, Hasin Jahan entrusted the care of her two daughters from her previous marriage to her first husband. Her first husband is a small shop owner in West Bengal. Shami and Jahan celebrated the arrival of their own daughter after this.

Shami and Jahan appeared to be the ideal couple with Shami’s bright cricketing career and a grand lifestyle. Their social media posts together and public displays of affection caught the eye of the media.

An unexpected turn of events in 2018, changed everything and led to their separation

In 2018, Hasin Jahan, Shami’s estranged wife first brought up the allegations of domestic abuse and adultery against Mohammed Shami. She filed a police complaint in Jadavpur, Kolkata. The fast bowler has continued to deny all allegations since then but his wife has been relentlessly seeking the case against him.

After the allegations by Hasin in 2018, the Kolkata Police’s women’s grievance cell questioned Shami and his elder brother Hasib Ahmed, and even an arrest warrant was issued against the Indian cricketer. A sessions court in West Bengal had stayed the arrest warrant issued against Shami.

Shami’s US Visa was revoked due to ongoing criminal and civil cases instigated by his wife

Though Mohammad Shami became a standout performer in the 2019 Cricket World Cup, his US Visa was revoked due to ongoing cases against him.

Jahan also alleged that Shami was involved in match-fixing, betting, and associations with Pakistani agents

These accusations directed to Shami’s suspension from cricket. However, subsequent investigations by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) found these claims baseless, resulting in Shami’s reinstatement.

Shami’s wife demanded monthly alimony of Rs 10 lakh

Hasin Jahan filed multiple cases against Shami, including charges under sections 498A, 307, and 376 of the Indian Penal Code, maintenance cases, and allegations of domestic violence, among others. Her demands included a monthly alimony of Rs 10 lakh, which included Rs 7 lakh for personal expenses and Rs 3 lakh for the maintenance of their daughter.

The turmoil in Shami’s life beyond the legal battles

Hasin Jahan started creating disturbances outside Shami’s residence, forcing his family to evacuate their own home.

The estranged wife of Mohammed Shami has moved the Supreme Court by way of a Special Leave Petition to lift stay on the arrest warrant against her husband

She alleged that a criminal case against Shami had been “erroneously stayed for the past 4 years, without any just circumstances” and said that the Indian cricketer didn’t stop having extra-marital affairs with prostitutes, even when he was on tours with the senior national cricket team.

Hasin Jahan, through her counsels Deepak Prakash, Nachiketa Vajpayee, and Divyangna Malik Vajpayee, challenged the Calcutta HC’s March 28 order but her plea for subduing the session court order was dismissed.

From demanding dowry to extra-marital sexual affairs the estranged wife of Shami made some shocking allegations

The latest plea of Hasin Jahan in the Supreme Court alleged that the sessions court in Kolkata passed the order to stay action against Shami even though the cricketer “did not even pay for the stay of criminal trial and his sole grievance was only against the issuance of arrest warrants”. In her plea, Hasin Jahan also alleged that Shami used to pester her for dowry.

The petition said,

“Mr. Shami used to demand dowry from her and that he has been continuously involved in illicit extra-marital sexual affairs with prostitutes, especially during his BCCI tours, in the hotel rooms provided by the BCCI, even till the present day. Mrs. Hasin Jahan has alleged in the Petition that Mr. Shami used to use his 2nd mobile phone- HTC company, mobile no. +447864905556, for managing all his affairs in relation to prostitutes and the said phone was seized by the Lal Bazaar Police, Kolkata, in connection with the present crime. However, Mr. Shami, as per the allegations in the Petition, still continues to be involved in sexual activities with prostitutes”

It also said,

“When the Petitioner raised her voice against it, she was assaulted and harassed by her husband and his family members, who also constantly demanded dowry from her”

Still no proper resolution in sight

A Kolkata court ordered Shami to pay a monthly alimony of Rs 50,000 to his estranged wife Hasin Jahan earlier in January 2023. But despite six long years of legal battles the cases involving Mohammad Shami and Hasin Jahan have yet to get a resolution. Fresh cases against Shami are still making headlines and affecting his career.
