The first, not so awkward meet
Dharmendra and Hema first met at the sets of the film, Tum Haseen Main Jawan in 1970. The two of them played the lead role in the film and eventually fell in love. But, Dharmendra was already married to Prakash Kaur at that time, while he was the father to his two kids, Bobby and Sunny Deol. But that didn’t help Dharmendra not to fall for Hema.
Hema being the Dream Girl then, the way she still is now, received a lot of marriage proposals. Luckily for Dharmendra, Hema did fall for him as well, reportedly she also rejected a lot of proposals. Hema “almost married” Jeetendra, but cupid played its role well for Dharmendra and their marriage did not happen. Though the two of them, Jeetendra and Hema remained in touch after that incident.
After all of the drama, Hema and Dharmendra met on scenes of Sholay. Dharmendra was absolutely lovestruck by then and reportedly he bribed the light workers present in the set, to cause malfunctions. Why? So that the scene had multiple retakes and he gets to hold his love interest, Hema. After the release of the film, fans were awestruck and were in love with their on-screen romance. But little did they know, the two love birds already started dating.
No, everything did not happen the way you thought it would’ve happened. For example, Dharmendra divorced Prakash Kaur to marry Hema and that’s the end of the story, nope that’s not the story. They went through a lot of hurdles, firstly, Hema did not want to get involved with a married man.
She did not find the connection ethical enough. Even Hema’s parents did not approve of the marriage, they were completely against it. Dharmendra’s wife, Prakash Kaur, did not agree to the divorce either. At that time, Dharmendra was the father of Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol. Seeing, Hema still being interested in him, Dharmendra opted to change his religion to Islam, so he could marry Hema, without getting divorced with Prakash.
Hema Malini’s father was strictly against the marriage as he didn’t wanted his daughter to marry someone who is already married. Although Hema married Dharmedra after her father passed away. Hema’s mother was deeply hurt by this. The couple dated for 5 years before getting married. Though Hema’s family did not accept the marriage it still took place. The marriage wasn’t a grand one rather a personal wedding, with only a handful of guests around. They got married in 1980 following the Iyengar rituals since Hema was Iyengar.

“Dilawar Khan Kewal Krishn (44 years) accepted Aisha Bi R. Chakravarty (29 years) as his wife on 21 August 1979 at a mehr of Rs 111,000 in the presence of two legal witnesses.”
After getting married to Hema, Dharmendra was still the husband to Prakash. Soon about 1 year into the marriage they welcomed Esah Deol, Dharmendra’s 3rd kid in 1981, and the 4th, Ahana Deol in 1985.
Reportedly Hema claims that even after years of their marriage, Dharmendra’s love towards her did not decrease even a bit. Rather it keeps growing day by day.
