As we are well aware of Captain Vikram Batra and his extreme bravery, are you aware of Vikram Batra’s love story? Vikram was selected as the lieutenant during the 13th Battalion Jammu Kashmir Rifles in 1997. After that he got promoted as the Captain on the battlefield.
The Kargil war was one of our most remarkable moments. And during the blood wrenching war, Batra’s cry was, “Yeh Dil Maange More” from the capture point of 5140. It happened back in 19th June 1999 and under the leadership of Vikram Batra the Indian army successfully captured point 5140.

After that operation got over successfully, Vikram volunteered himself to capture one of the toughest points till now, 4875. The historic capture of that point led the mountain to be named after Vikram Batra to validate and cherish his bravery. He was also posthumously awarded Param Vir Chakra for his bravery and actions during the Kargil War.
Batra wasn’t only an amazing soldier and captain. He was also a dedicated, loving and sincere lover towards his partner, Dimple Cheema, and he loved her very dearly.

Vikram Batra and Dimple Cheema first meeting
Their story enlightened and proved the meaning of the word, “true love.” It started off as just friends and ended with a bond for lifetime, marriage. So it is in the movie too, they both met during their university days. Vikram was an MA English student form Punjab university and that’s where they met each other.
But they weren’t able to finish their whole degree because in between Vikram got selected for the IMA. He always wanted to be a part of the defence, after getting selected Dimple recalls him calling her excited to tell her this news. Dimple, in an interview with The Quint said,
“I guess it was just destiny playing its part in bringing us together, to share lives and become an integral part of each other.”

When Vikram called Dimple to let her know about his selection, Dimple said, “that news had in fact put a seal on our relationship.” Due to this, they used to be apart a lot, Dimple happened to be pressured about the issue of marriage by her family, as usual. While discussing that with Vikram, one day Vikram said to her, “take care to get what you like or you will be forced to like what you get.” Dimple revealed that, till this date she tries to follow what Vikram said to her and cherishes every little thing she can.

They made it kind of a schedule to visit a Mansa Devi temple and Gurudwara Shri Nada Sahib. During one of their visits to Gurudwara while doing the parikrama of Nishant Sahib Vikram held Dimple’s dupatta and kept walking behind her. After parikrama was done, Vikram looked at Dimple and said, “Congratulations Mrs. Batra.” That was the level of dedication Vikram Batra had towards the relationship.
There were some twist in tales and it turned out that Dimple parents staretd to force her to marry someone else. Remembering one of the incident Dimple recalled,
“On one of his visits, I raised the issue of marriage as I was feeling a bit insecure. Without saying anything, he took a blade out of his wallet, cut his thumb and filled my maang with his blood. That is the most cherished moment of my life to date. Then, later on, I used to tease him that he is pura filmy.”
Fate played a cruel role in their in their love story
The couple decided to get married once Vikram returns from Kargil war. But destiny had decided something else. Vikram did returned but wrapped in tricolor. The brave young officer sacrificed his life while saving one of his soldier. On 7 July 1999, Vikram Batra passed away and engraved his name among India’s greatest military heroes.
Dimple Cheema never married anyone and decided to stay Vikram Batra’s widow
Dimple is a school teacher and till date, she remembers the details of their 4 years of courtship and proudly says that she loves Captain Vikram Batra.
After Vikram left the world Dimple decided not to marry anyone. She works as a school teacher and lives with the memories the couple had during their 4 years of courtship. And proudly says she loves Captain Vikram Batra. In a conversation Dimple said,
“Not a single day in the past 17 years, have I felt detached from you. It feels as if you are away on a posting. I feel so proud when people talk about your accomplishments. But along with that there is some regret in the corner of my heart. You should have been here, sharing, listening to the stories of your brave deeds, of how you are the inspiration to the youth of today. I know in my heart that we are going to meet again, it’s just a matter of time.”
Vikram is sadly not here with us anymore, in the honour of him Bollywood came up with a biopic as well. Sidharth Malhotra who played the role of Vikram in this film, lived up to the expectations of the whole Batra family. All we wish to say to him is, we’re proud of you sir.
