The South Indian film industry is very diverse and churns out each year a very high number of movies in every genre. It is also a source of inspiration for some of the great Bollywood movies such as Rowdy Rathore, Wanted, etc. But even the South Indian film industry has sometimes copied from Bollywood and adopted few movies into any of the South Indian languages, which have proved to be a major successes.

1. Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. remade 4 times including Shankar Dada M.B.B.S. (Telugu)

Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. is a comic yet motivational movie where a gangster named Munna Bhai gets to study medicine by forcing a medical scholar to write his entrance exam. The movie throws light on the loopholes of the system. Naturally, the response to the movie was overwhelming in Bollywood as well as the Telugu industry.

2. Manithanin (Tamil) from Jolly LLB

Sanjeev Nanda got trapped into his hit-and-run case back in 1999, and it is what inspires the Bollywood movie which later inspired the Tamil movie. In the movie, Jolly fights against the corruption in the judiciary which he realizes after he had corrupted himself for fame. Jolly LLB was released in 2013, whereas the Tamil movie came out in 2016.

3. Nanban (Tamil) from 3 Idiots

3 Idiots, starring Aamir Khan, is among the best movies of Bollywood. A story of engineering students and their jobs, ambitions, and problems, the movie resonated with the youth which brought it tremendous success. The movie was adapted in Tamil as Nanban and had Vijay, Ileana D’Cruz and Jiiva in the lead roles. The south Indian adaptation came out in 2012, whereas 3 Idiots came in 2009.

4. Unnaipol Oruvan (Tamil) from A Wednesday

Released in 2008, A Wednesday is among the best drama and mystery movies in Bollywood. It’s about a man threatening a bomb blast in Mumbai. This movie has been adapted in Hollywood as A Common Man and Unnaipol Oruvan in Tamil. The Tamil movie was released in 2009, starring Kamal Hassan and Mohanlal in lead roles.

5. Kanden Kadhalai (Tamil) from Jab We Met

Jab We Met is among the best movies of Kareena Kapoor. The story is of a girl from Bhatinda, played by Kareena, who misses her train and blames a guy from Mumbai, played by Shahid Kapoor, and then forces him to help her reach home. The Tamil movie with the same plot came out in 2009 starring Bharat and Tamannah in lead roles.

6. Gabbar Singh (Telugu) from Dabangg

Dabangg, starring Salman Khan, is one of the highest-grossing movies of the superstar, who fit the role of a police inspector to the dot. As a cop, Khan’s character has to eradicate a gangster in the town who causes a lot of chaos, while maintaining his love story. The movie was very well-received and loved. Gabbar Singh has Telugu superstar Pawan Kalyan in the lead role.

7. Teen Mar (Telugu) from Love Aaj Kal

Deepika Padukone and Saif Ali Khan starrer Love Aaj Kal released in 2009 and was directed by Imtiaz Ali. The movie did not do very well, but the critics liked it. It was adapted into Telugu as Teen Maar in 2011, starring Pawan Kalyan as the lead actor and Trisha Krishnan as the lead actress in the movie. The BO results, even in South India, were similar to that of the Bollywood original.

8. Settai (Tamil) from Delhi Belly

Delhi Belly, an offbeat movie starring Imran Khan, Vir Das and Kunaal Roy Kapur, was a hit. The film focuses on the troubles of the trio after they get caught up in a series of events connected to a gangster because they misplaced his diamonds. The movie was released in 2011, and the Tamil counterpart was released in 2013.

9. Gopala Gopala (Telugu) from OMG – Oh My God!

This is a movie which gained a lot of controversy because of its religious theme, starring Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal in the lead roles, the film shows an atheist filing a lawsuit against God for demolishing his shop in an earthquake and then God himself appearing as a tenant in disguise at his place. The reception of the movie was amazing, and thus it was remade into Telugu film called Gopala Gopala starring Pawan Kalyan and Venkatesh.

10. Shankar Dada Zindabad (Telugu) from Lage Raho Munnabhai from Bollywood

The movie is all about following the epic and unusual principles of Mahatma Gandhi that brought India its independence. Sanjay Dutt featured in the Bollywood movie, and the movie did really well in South India. Chiranjeevi and Karishma Kotak starred in the Telugu adaptation of the movie and played their roles really well.
