Singer Shubh speaks

Shubhneet Singh, a Canadian-Punjabi artist better known as Shubh, has greatly impacted the music scene. Because of chartbuster songs like Elevated, OG, and Cheques, he has gained a sizable global fan base all around the world. However, he has recently found himself at the center of a contentious debate.

Shubh has been receiving flak because of his purported support for Khalistan. It all began when news spread that the artist would perform in Mumbai from September 23 to 25, as part of the Cruise Control 4.0 conference held aboard the Cordelia Cruise. Also, he was set to play in places including Hyderabad, Bangalore, and New Delhi. Reacting to this, the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the BJP’s youth wing, destroyed posters advertising his event. BJYM members claimed that those who promote “Khalistan” have no place in the nation.

Upon seeing the growing controversy, electronics company BoAt made the decision to stop supporting Shubh’s forthcoming India tour. This decision marked a dramatic shift in the current course of action. BoAt’s choice is mainly influenced by Shubh’s earlier controversial actions when he uploaded a distorted map of India on his Instagram account.

For the uninitiated, his map didn’t have the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, or the Northeastern regions. In his Instagram post, the singer captioned the picture “Pray for Punjab,” a move that drew widespread criticism on social media. Afterward, Shubh removed the map and substituted a message reading “Pray for Punjab” without an image.

Not only BoAt, but also cricketers including Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, and Hardik Pandya, have also unfollowed him on Instagram. Now, the singer has reacted to this whole controversy in his recent post.

Shubh posts his opinion on the cancellation of his India tour

After the recent cancellation of his Still Rollin’ India tour, singer Shubh responded to this whole controversy on Thursday by posting a lengthy message to his Instagram account. In his statement, he stressed that the tour marked the realization of his life’s goal to perform his songs in front of his own people.

Shubh said that he had spent the previous two months practicing with unshakable commitment and enthusiasm for his tour. He added,

The rapper went on to express his love for India and said that his forefathers made sacrifices to ensure India’s freedom. Shubh further asked people to refrain from calling Punjab and Punjabis separatists and anti-nationals. He wrote,

Shubh clarified the social media post that sparked the uproar and said there was no thought behind it and no hate intended. Concluding his post, he revealed that all the accusations against him deeply affected him, and he will soon come back. He concluded by writing,

Notably, the singer’s tour dispute has arisen in the middle of tense diplomatic tensions between India and Canada. Canada accused India on Monday of killing Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar back in June. They also expelled New Delhi’s intelligence chief in Ottawa. In response, India also expelled its intelligence chief from the country and purportedly stalled visas for Canadians. India also rejected Canada’s accusations and tagged the country as a “safe haven for terrorists.”

These diplomatic moves further strained the already tense relationship between the two nations, bringing it to an all-time low.
