Times when Rahul Dravid Got Angry

One among India’s finest batsmen ever, Rahul Dravid, is known all around the cricketing world not only for his batting but for his calmness too. At the time of his playing days, rarely did anyone witness Dravid losing his temper, be it the opposition players, teammates, officials, or anyone for that matter. But, there were some cases when one realized that ‘The Wall’ was only human and he did lose his calmness at times. But, there were not many instances of Dravid showing dissent in his international career, compared to what we witnessed during his IPL career as a player and mentor.

Here are 5 unforgettable occasions when Rahul Dravid lost his temper!

1. Dravid throws his cap in anger

There was this thing about Rajasthan Royals’ face-off with Mumbai Indians which made Rahul Dravid show many emotions as compared to any other games. One of the famous cases came in a match among the two sides in the year 2014 IPL. It was a perhaps do-or-die clash and Mumbai required to chase down 190 in 14.3 overs to become eligible for the playoffs.

Sitting in the dugout as the mentor of the Rajasthan Royals, Dravid must have been pretty sure of his team sealing their berth. Though, some surprising batting by the Mumbai Indians saw them level Rajasthan’s score in the stipulated number of overs. With a boundary needed to seal the deal, a batsman named Aditya Tare smashed a six to enable his team to make it through.

2. Shoaib Akhtar bears the brunt of Dravid’s anger

Pakistani speedster named Shoaib Akhtar used to be a pretty irritating cricketer at the time of his playing days, particularly in matches against India. We’ve all come across the battles with Virender Sehwag and opportunities to get beneath the skin of Sachin Tendulkar.
So, the largest evidence of his notoriety in Indo-Pak came across was him trying to make even a highly composed character lose his patience.

In the year 2004 Champions Trophy battle among the two sides at Birmingham, Rahul Dravid was the single shining star in India’s dismal performance with the bat. At the time of one of Akhtar’s overs, Dravid pushed to run a quick two only to find the beefy bowler standing in his way. This angered him to the extent that he went up to the bowler and said him to stay out of the way, instigating Pakistani skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq to step in and separate the two.

3. Mitchell Johnson raises Dravid’s temper

Flogging arrives naturally to Australians and especially their fast bowlers. The final great carrier of this ‘so-called’ legacy was a few days ago retired left-arm pacer Mitchell Johnson. While Johnson’s ways have worked pretty good against some batsmen, they have completely fallen flat against some of the others.

In Qualifier 2 of the 2013 edition of the IPL, the Aussie chose the wrong night to try and get into Rahul Dravid’s skin and eventually paid the price for it. The 3rd over of the Rajasthan Royals innings saw Dravid smash a straight drive off Johnson’s bowling instigating the bowler to speak a few words to the batsman.

The Indian player did not step back and had a couple of words of his own to say. Off the very next ball, Rahul Dravid flicked Mitchell Johnson for another four and the Australian had few more words to share. In an uncommon show of foul temper, Dravid walked up to Johnson and asked him if he wanted to say something.

4. The Wall loses his cool and flings a chair

It is tough to think Rahul Dravid throwing things away in anger. But, this was a situation that literally took place and was posted by Dravid’s wife Vijeta during an interview. Mrs Dravid said that she had once been told by the master batsman’s long back team-mate Virender Sehwag that he once threw a chair out of anger. The cause for Dravid’s livid anger was the after-effect of India losing a home Test to England pretty badly.

It was a circumstance about which Rahul Dravid had told Vijeta before, but he had slipped the chair-throwing part which Sehwag told her about later.

5. Dravid voices his anger over Kieron Pollard at a press conference

This took place in another IPL face-off among Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians in the year 2013 brought this side of Rahul Dravid to the fore. But, he did not show off this on the field but displayed it in the way he spoke at the post-match press conference. Mumbai all-rounder Kieron Pollard was non-stop nagging Rajasthan’s star player Shane Watson throughout his stay at the pitch. After he left, Pollard not only gave Watson a send-off but also moved towards the Royals dugout later and made fun of Aussie again, instigating the latter to leave the place.

Dravid, the skipper of Rajasthan Royals, did not mince his words at the press conference when he termed a bowler sending off a batsman after dismissing him as an act of sheer cowardness. It was clear that he was saying about the Pollard-Watson case.
