He does, however, have unusual encounters with India, and as a result, he has always been in the headlines in the Indian media for all the wrong reasons.
Talking about the most recent instance, Herschelle Gibbs, a former member of the South African National Cricket Team, recently disclosed a rather peculiar explanation for his absence from the current Road Safety World Series 2022 competition and blamed BCCI President Sourav Ganguly for it all.
So, here’s what actually transpired.
Herschelle Gibbs not playing in Road Safety World Series
The Road Safety World Series 2022 kicked off on September 10, 2022, and its final is slated for October 1. Eight teams are taking part in the competition, which are Bangladesh, South Africa, Australia, England, Sri Lanka, and the West Indies.
However, Herschelle Gibbs, who played in 90 Tests, 248 ODIs, and 23 T20 Internationals for the South African National Cricket Team, is not a member of the Jonty Rhodes-led team competing in the event. Many on social media raised questions about his absence from the game.
Shane Watson recently took the position of the former Proteas great in the World Giants lineup for the unique game of the forthcoming Legends League Cricket season.
Gibbs shares the reason for not participating the Road Safety World Series in India
The 48-year-old shared the genuine reason for not participating in the RSWS 2022 on Twitter on Saturday, September 10.
In response to Gibbs’ tweet on the third Test match in the three-match Test series between England and South Africa, a fan wrote,
“Missing you on Road Safety Legend League….pls join.

In response Gibbs explained that the BCCI president, Sourav Ganguly, won’t permit him to play in the tournament in India because he took part in the Kashmir Premier League the previous year. He tweeted,
“Ganguly won’t allow me to play because I went to Kashmir league last year.”
His comments have put him in a tough spot, even on social media, and that’s why he later deleted his tweet.
While few people support him, many other people troll him harshly for his insensitive remarks. Many people also advised him to stay away from Kashmir and also praised the BCCI for allegedly taking this step.
Notably, despite opposition from the BCCI and India, Gibbs participated in the Kashmir Premier League, which was conducted in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
He also shocked everyone by alleging publicly that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was threatening him and doing everything in its power to keep him from participating in the Kashmir Premier League.
For those who are unaware, Shehryar Khan Afridi, a Pakistani politician, was the one who came up with the idea of the Kashmir Premier League. Six teams, namely Overseas Warriors, Muzaffarabad Tigers, Rawalakot Hawks, Bagh Stallions, Mirpur Royals, and Kotli Lions, compete in this competition.
