Angelo Mathews’ dismissal during Sri Lanka VS Bangladesh WC scripts history

During the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, Sri Lankan cricketer Angelo Mathews faced an unusual dismissal on November 6 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. Mathews became the first player to be “timed out” in cricket history. This occurred because he took too long to prepare at the batting crease, mainly due to an issue with his helmet strap.

Bangladesh’s team captain, Shakib Al Hasan, appealed for Mathews’ dismissal, and after consultation, the on-field umpires, Marais Erasmus and Richard Illingworth, ruled in favor of the appeal, sparking considerable debate and controversy within the cricket community.

Here is what the “time-out” rule states

The MCC law 40.1.1 states that when a wicket falls or a batter retires, the next batter must be ready to face the ball or allow the other batter to be ready for the next delivery within 3 minutes. If the next batsman fails to do so within the required 3 minutes period he is bound to face a consequence. The consequence is where the incoming batter can be declared out and this is what is referred to as being “timed-out”.

What is worth noting is that as of September 2022, the time limit for an incoming batter to be ready to take their position at the crease has been reduced. In Tests and ODIs, they now have a time foundation of only two minutes, and in T20Is, the time limit remains at 90 seconds. If they fail to meet these new time requirements as per the ICC, the fielding captain can appeal for a “timed out” dismissal.

This rule change has undoubtedly created some controversy in the cricketing world, with some believing that Bangladesh’s use of the rule to appeal for a timed-out dismissal was against the spirit of the game, while others supported their knowledge and application of the rules.
