Man says chicken found in paneer biryani

Online food ordering has become increasingly common in India in recent years. It has also become an essential component of the Indian food industry. The widespread use of the Internet has played a significant role in driving the expansion of delivery services in India. With the rapid development of digital infrastructure and the affordability of cell phones, a larger segment of the Indian population now has access to online meal delivery services.

These platforms may now penetrate new markets and increase their client bases thanks to the increased accessibility of food delivery services. Yet as their influence grows, problems also appear. The availability of meal delivery services has created new market opportunities for companies, allowing them to reach a larger consumer base and grow their clientele. However, as these services extend their reach, they also encounter certain challenges.

Making sure food is safe and hygienic is one of the biggest problems Indian meal delivery firms confront. With the escalating number of food delivery orders, there is an increased risk of food contamination and order mix-ups. This problem was recently brought to light by a Twitter user who uploaded a tweet about an event involving his friend’s family while they were visiting Varanasi during the current holy Sawan month.

Twitter user shares incident of getting chicken instead of paneer from Zomato

According to a widely shared tweet by Ashwini Shrivastava, his family had purchased a family pack of paneer biryani. The order was billed for Rs. 1228 online from the popular restaurant “Behrouz Biryani.” However, to their shock, they were given chicken biryani in its place. The tweet said,

My friend is in Varanasi with his family during this holy month of Sawan. He had ordered family pack Paneer veg biryani (worth ₹ 1228) from the famous ‘@BehrouzBiryani’ through @zomato, but they made them eat chicken biryani instead! @deepigoyal

The tweet included videos showing chicken pieces in paneer biryani package, contradicting the “Veg” label on it. Ashwini expressed her annoyance by saying that his family, who never eats meat, had their religious convictions violated by Zomato and “Behrouz Biryani.” He added,

This family never eats meat, but due to Zomato and the Varanasi’s famous ‘Behrouz Biryani’, their religious beliefs have been violated! Initially, they didn’t even realize that it was actually chicken biryani because even paneer biryani’s paneer is wrapped in a besan (gram flour) covering, and they had ordered paneer biryani. It was only when they tasted it that they realized it was something else.

Ashwini questioned the responsibility, saying that Behrouz Biryani had told the family to get in touch with Zomato, which then gave them directions to the hotel. He went on to wrote,

From the order box to the billing, everywhere it is written Paneer veg Biryani, so why it is Chicken Biryani instead? Why is Zomato and the famous Behrouz Biryani in Varanasi is playing with the people’s religious beliefs? These people were about to leave for the temple after having their meal. Even before that, their religious beliefs have been violated due to Zomato & Behrouz. When they called the Behrouz Biryani, they were told to contact Zomato, and when they called Zomato, they were told to talk to the hotel! After all, Who is responsible for this?

The tweet gained traction, drawing numerous kinds of reactions from people. Several people advised suing Zomato and the restaurant for the poor service. Others also cautioned against ordering vegetarian meals from eateries known for serving meat. Some comments solely blamed the restaurant and not Zomato, emphasizing that Zomato simply delivers the food ordered by customers without checking its contents.

Restaurant reacted to the whole controversy

In response to the tweet, ‘Behrouz Biryani’ expressed their apologies for the unpleasant experience. They also requested Ashwini to provide their contact number for prompt resolution. Their tweet said,

Hi Ashwini, apologies for the mishap. We never intended to do that. We will get this checked immediately.
