Social media and dating apps have completely changed how individuals meet and start romantic relationships. Platforms such as Tinder, Bumble, and Hinge provide easy means for people to broaden their social networks, meet new people, and even fall in love in the digital era. Similarly, social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter offer channels for people to communicate and exchange personal stories.
These platforms have become the go-to way to meet new people because of how simple and accessible they are. Although these networks have many advantages, they have also led to the growth of an alarming trend: online dating scams.

Online dating scams are deceptive plans in which con artists fabricate profiles to trick vulnerable people. Usually, the intention is to force the victim into giving them money, private information, or account access. However, sometimes, it becomes a nightmare for innocent people.
To win over their victims’ confidence, scammers use a variety of strategies, such as emotional blackmail and catfishing, which involve fabricating a persona.
Something similar recently happened with an X user named Sumit. On the platform X, formerly, Sumit reveals how he almost became a victim of dating scams. Needless to say, his story went viral on social media, leaving people with divided thoughts. So, let’s find out what he shared and how people reacted.
The boy revealed how his online date almost scammed him via blackmail
On 28th April, X user Sumit revealed in a series of posts how a girl he connected with through social media tried to scam him after they met physically for the first time.
According to his post, before their first in-person meeting, Sumit had been communicating with the girl over social media for the previous two months. However, something significant happened in the interaction, which led Sumit to compare it to “a cinema.” In his post, Sumit wrote,
“I met this girl on X 2 months back! Yesterday I met her for the first time in real life .. What happened next is a Cinema! 100 likes and I’ll reveal the next chat here!”
While he first kept the specifics of what happened a secret, he later shared their chats on social media.

Post under fire after concerns over the authenticity of the incident sparked
His post soon went viral and attracted various kinds of reactions. Many people took his side by applauding him for exposing a scammer. However, there is another side, as many people have started to be skeptical about the authenticity of the incident. Many people labeled it as a story of a web series.
Even the community notes on the posts hinted that Sumit could have been lying to his readers, pointing out that both sides of the text exchange seemed to be using the same typography and spelling mistakes. This sparked concerns that Sumit could have been using Shreeya’s identity as a ploy to increase account interaction.
