Suchitra Krishnamoorthi talks about influencer culture and its effects on our lives.

Suchitra wrote a thorough article on the X platform, where she recounted talks with friends and focused on the attention-seeking conduct that young people exhibit. She referred to this behavior as the “Orry culture” and linked it to Orry’s rising popularity. Thinking back to conversations on the negative effects of influencer culture on society, she described an encounter she had with a very successful business person when she was staying at a friend’s house in London. She wrote,

“2 years ago me and Kaveri were at a friends home in London. He is one of the wealthiest people in the world and an inspiration to many in the business world. Coming from humble small town beginings, he very honestly stated that when he was acquiring wealth in his earlier days , he was focussed on what brands he aspired to own ( he can now probably buy many outright) and as his earnings increased those are the 1st things he purchased for himself and his family.”

She added,

“He then asked Kaveri what are her favourite brands. To which she honestly stated that her choices are dictated by her current aesthetic and taste rather than a trend or a fad or the price tag. He then asked me. And i said what i thought – an artist or an individual of calibre is a brand by themselves. Mastery and excellence in their field of work is the only brand an artist needs to aspire to.”

During her reunion with her old personal trainer, Suchitra thought back to that incident while she was getting loans for expensive bags to keep up with her star customers. Concerned about the changing mindset, she recalled how she didn’t agree with the exaltation of wearing brands just to show off status symbols; she linked it to low self-esteem and insecurity. Speaking about this, Orry wrote,

“To flaunt other peoples labels that reek of a price tag, to do it because its a status symbol and its what the other rich do in my view reeks of insecurity and a lack of individuality. Cowardice. Why did i remember this today? Bec i got in touch with my ex personal trainer again- a lady who took loans to buy designer bags so she didnt feel inferior to her celebrity clientelle. Still on ur designer bag trip? I asked her. No way she said. Because her son was now asking for photos with her celebrity clientele to post on social media.”

She added,

“What nonsense. I dont want him to get into this #orry culture – its dangerous. He has to do something on his own. He has to realize that just posting photos with celebrities dosent make him one. I gave her a hug and we decided to start my training tomorow.”

She also discussed how the media perpetuates showy displays and expensive spending

Additionally, she emphasizes moving away from publicizing celebrity sensationalism. She said,

“On the way back home i couldnt stop thinking of this whole vulgar culture of spend and eyeball grabbing. At any cost. And of how irresponsible our mainstram media has also become, that propogates this flamboyant extravagance circus( all paid ofcourse) where they chose to highlight the price of an isha ambanis or alia bhats dress rather than the achievements of an olympian or social worker or even a self made hard working entrepreneur.”

She added,

“Its a ticketed zoo. The more the bling, the higher the footfalls. Merit be damned. We need a social cultural and economic mindset reset. That can only be driven by media. A media that we are all an equal part of…that we are responsible for… Wish u all a fabulous 2024… ❤️❤️❤️”

Orry reacted to Suchitra Krishnamoorthi’s remarks

On the other hand, Orry angrily reacted to Suchitra’s remarks. He was confused and even outraged by her mention of him and the phrase “Orry culture.” He denied knowing her personally and said he was perplexed by her remarks, making news. He also questioned why anyone’s perspective would be highlighted because of their connections. In his Instagram story, he wrote,

“Who is this woman!?1? And what even is Orry culture!!??? What is going on !!?? And why does she keep talking about me!!!?? I am so confusion rn. I have never met her. And why is something someone one’s friends saying making headlines?!!!?? These are the questions that haunt me and keep me awake at night!!!”
