Kunal Kamra mocks Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman through new song
On Wednesday, comedian Kunal Kamra released a new parody song in which he mocked Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and accused the BJP of “tanashahi” (dictatorship). Kamra posted the video after Mumbai police rejected his request to delay questioning for one week and sent him a second summons.
Kamra, who is accused of defamation, recently produced a parody of the well-known song “Hawa Hawai” from the film Mr. India. The song’s name is “Aapka tax ka paisa ho raha hai hawa hawai” which literally means “your tax money is going to waste.” It is full of sly jabs at the BJP-led Centre over failing bridges and traffic problems.

The song goes on to blame the central government for ignoring the middle class’s “aspirations” by making them “pay more taxes than corporates.” The lyrics say,
Logon ki lootne kamaai, sari waali didi aayi, salary churaane yeh hai aayi, middle class dabaane yeh hai aayi, popcorn khilaane yeh hai aayi, kehte hai isko Nirmala tai.

It is probable that the reference to popcorn refers to the dispute over the rates of Goods and Services Tax (GST) that are imposed on various popcorn varieties. Many tax slabs, which range from 5% to 18%, generated discussion about the intricacy and equity of GST classifications. Due to this, Nirmala Sitharaman was heavily criticized by the opposition earlier this year. Although the government justified the slabs as essential for preserving tax parity, the opposition said that such taxing differences caused confusion and burdened consumers.
