Indian Railways is the biggest means of transport in India and fourth largest railway network in the world. With more than 20,000 passenger trains plying daily from 7,349 stations across the whole country, people are bound to feel hungry and the stations are bound to have arrangements! Now in all these railways stations, there has to be not one but many food outlets, well, mostly! And out of all the food outlets there usually is that one special joint which serves the best food item that many people crave to have daily. And some people might even travel just to feast on that food.

1. Vada pav and batata vada, Karjat Station – Maharashtra

One of the most popular among travellers traveling between Mumbai and Pune, these are must-haves. Get down at Karjat station to grab these lip-smacking Maharashtrian snacks and gorge on!

2. Poha, Ratlam Junction – Madhya Pradesh

If the name reminds of the movie Jab We Met, you are on the right track. This junction is nothing as shown in the movie though, as it buzzes with life even at odd hours. While here, do not forget to try the ‘kanda poha’ served with Ratlami Sev which at the station. Other times to try here are jalebis and petha.

3. Choley Bhature, Jalandhar Station – Punjab

Well, being Punjab, it has to offer the best and richest in terms of food. Lip smacking choley bhature are available at many other places in Punjab but the Jalandhar station has its own unique charm in serving delicious choley bhature.

4. Lassi, Amritsar – Punjab

While we are still talking about Punjab, what better place to discuss the mighty old Lassi! Super filling, the sweet lassi sold at the Amritsar Junction is heavenly and just what you need to make the rest of your journey relaxing.

5. Aloo Puri, Kharagpur – West Bengal

Talk about ‘Station waley aloo’ think Kharagpur. Mouth watering aloo ki sabji served with fluffy puris is what would make the travel worthwhile!

While we are still at Kharagpur, let’s not forget to gorge on the delicious dum aloo that are specific to this station. It is also served with puris and makes for a yummylicious hearty meal!

7. Rabri, Abu Road – Rajasthan

This little city’s railway station is home to one of the best Rabri’s you will ever have! Hop off the train the next time you are travelling on this route to taste this heavenly delicacy. The station lies in Rajasthan just a little short of Mount Abu.

8. Maddur Vada, Maddur – Karnataka

This is a popular snack of Maddur made from rice flour, semolina, onions and masalas. While the crispy vadas are served at various places in Maddur, you can get a taste of these scrumptious vadas at the Maddur Station.

9. Aloo Tikki, Tundla Junction – Uttar Pradesh

Carrying on with the snacks, while at Tundla Junction, do not forget to gorge on the lip-smacking aloo tikki here. Enjoy the hot and crispy savoury with curd and chutneys which are a speciality of this place and station, and I am already drooling!

10. Chicken Biryani, Shoranur – Kerala

This station in Kerala serves one of the best chicken biryanis that leaves you content and full relishing its taste to the hilt! So, if you are traveling on this route and feeling hungry, you know where to get off to grab a plate of biryani!

13. Red tea, Guwahati – Assam

Known as Lal Sah here, this sugary tea is prepared without any milk and is red in colour. What better place to have tea in its authentic flavour than Assam, which boasts of its tea gardens? The rich taste and brew of this tea will leave asking for more!

One of the busiest railway stations in this country, it also serves amazing, not fish as anyone would assume, but chicken cutlets. So, ditch the ‘maachi’ next time you land on this station and try the appetizing chicken cutlet for a taste of heaven!

15. Fish Curry, Jamshedpur’s Tatanagar Junction – Jharkhand

Alright, is you are still hellbent on having fish curry then hop off at the Jamshedpur’s Tatanagar Junction for a mouth-watering fish curry! Head to the canteen at the station and relish the savoury delicacy for a hearty meal.

16. Kachori with Kadhi, Ajmer station – Rajasthan

If you are fond of kachoris then this is a must try! The kachori sold at the Ajmer railway station is served with yummy kadhi and is an awesome dish to savour. Although not too far is a place where they serve a huge kachori called kachora! Hop off at the Nasirabad station to grab one of these!

17. Pedas at Mathura Junction – Uttar Pradesh

Lastly, for a desert, head to – you guessed it right – Mathura Junction! Heavenly and sinful, these little sweet balls are perfect for munching throughout the journey or to be packed for later or for gifting! As Mathura is famous for its pedas, you can grab some mouth-watering ones right from the station in case you are not stopping over.

There are many more stations selling many more scrumptious delicacies that it is difficult to pen them all down. Consider the number of railway stations in total. However, these were the most popular ones that you might want to try if you are on the same route.
