What is the full form of the term ‘Bus’?

The word ‘bus’ that we commonly use today is not really an acronym. In fact, it is derived from a Latin word called ‘Omnibus’. Now it is obvious to wonder what does ‘omnibus’ mean. Well, omnibus means ‘for all’ or ‘for everyone’. The term ‘omnibus’ was first used in Paris back in the early 19th century.

To be more specific, in 1824, a French businessman named Stanislas Baudry started a public transport service in France where the vehicle was used for carrying passengers. These vehicles were called ‘omnibus carriages’.  This was of course a horse-drawn carriage at the time which was started for the general public and not just for the wealthy.

It was used to carry large number of passengers at one go from one place to another.

Over time, the name was shortened to be just called as ‘bus’ as and when it evolved to its motorized version that we see on roads today. So, unlike other modern terms, ‘bus’ is not an acronym but a over time shortened version of ‘omnibus’.  It originated from a world that perfectly represents its purpose that is to provide transportation for all the people.

Following fixed path at fixed timings, buses operate in such a manner that travelers tend to prefer this means of transportation over others. Modern buses are designed in such a manner that it becomes inclusive for all. An elderly person may find traveling in flights difficult when it comes to their health.
