I’ll start by asking, How important is your skin colour for you?
In fact, do you even care what colour you are until it is rubbed in by others? As the world has gotten competitive, so has the need to look better than the others, which is done mostly by hiding your flaws. But the point is, are they really your flaws? A skin colour is acquired since birth and it is yours and only yours. But many a times people, mostly girls, are made to feel bad about it.

It is not a problem, it is not a flaw; but only if people understood this truth. From matrimonial columns to everyday situations, a lot of preference is given to ‘fairer’ girls. We all need to change this pre conceived notion and bias towards the darker skin.
While most people in the world still go gaga over fair complexion, let’s take a look at why darker tones of skin have a scientific edge over the former:
1. Dark skin are less prone to sunburns
Melanin is the natural substance that gives our skin, eyes and hair its colour. It also protects our skin from sun’s ultraviolet radiation which can cause skin damage. The level of melanin is higher in darker skin, therefore, it is more protected. Dark skin are less prone to sunburns or blisters when exposed to sunlight.
2. Lesser risk of Skin Cancer
As melanin reduces the penetration of sun’s harmful rays into the deep layers of your skin, it protects you from various kinds of skin cancers.

3. Lesser skin irregularities
Lighter skin comes with its share of problems too such as freckles, spots and visibility of blood vessels on the face. However, people with a darker skin mostly do not have to face such problems.
4. Makes you look younger
Higher levels of melanin in darker skin protects it from long terms skin damages as well such as dark spots, wrinkles and rough texture, making you age slower than the fairer counterparts.
5. Less make-up required
As darker skin is usually blessed with a good amount of tones, you hardly need to work upon it. Moreover, Kohl takes on a new meaning on this kind of complexion, giving you a sexy and confident look.
6. Sun screen not a necessity
People with darker tones of skin do not have to worry about carrying a sun screen with them at all times when they go out in the sun. Their skin is naturally blessed with a protective layer which protects it from harmful rays of the sun.
7. Less folate deficiency
Folate is a water soluble vitamin B complex which is found in green leafy vegetables, citrus fruits and whole grains. It is also present in our skin and is responsible for productivity and growth reasons in men and women. The presence of higher amount of melanin in darker skin protects it from folate depletion as well.
8. Being exotically sexy
A not-so-scientific reason being, many people in countries with fair complexioned population consider the darker skin exotic, sexy and beautiful. In order to achieve a desired darker/ tanned look, they have to resort to different ways of getting it done which involve indoor and outdoor/ natural methods of tanning. While people with a darker tone don’t have to worry!

9. Embrace your colour
It exudes confidence. You being comfortable with your skin only shows your level of confidence to others. If they don’t like your colour, it’s their problem, not yours.
Therefore, chasing fairness is only a way to encourage artificiality of this world and a sign of low self esteem and self worth. And if you don’t consider yourself worthy enough, then how will the others. So ditch all those fairness creams, and accept your skin tone with pride because beauty is not just skin deep.
