Who is Deepinder Goyal?

Deepinder Goyal was born on 26 January 1983 in Muktsar, Punjab. He is the co-founder and CEO of one of the biggest restaurant aggregators and food delivery companies in India. Apparently, he wasn’t the brightest back in school days, in fact, he was a below-average student who struggled to pass his classes. After almost failing in class 6, one of the teachers came up with a solved answer sheet.

Although he topped the class, Deepinder said that it gave him a false sense of confidence which didn’t feel right so he worked hard by himself.  He successfully managed to clear the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) Joint Entrance Examination on his first try and completed his Engineering from IIT, Delhi.

In 2005, after his graduation, he founded a delivery startup called Foodlet which unfortunately didn’t work out well.

How did he come up with the idea of Zomato?

Deepinder Goyal joined Bain and Company as an Associate Consultant back in January 2006 which is a business management consultant company in Gurgaon. While working
at Bain and Company for three years, he observed that there was a great deal of demand for menu cards among his colleagues during that time. This is what pushed the idea of Zomato in his mind.

In July 2008, Deepinder, along with Pankaj Chaddah who was his colleague at Bain and Company started Foodiebay, a restaurant listing and recommendation portal, which has evolved into what we know as Zomato now. He quit his job at Bain and Company in November 2009 to work committedly for his start-up. Zomato received its first investor cheque in 2010 from Sanjeev Bikhchandani of InfoEdge. In the beginning, the restaurants used to promote their brands on Zomato and it was quite advertisement-oriented.

Now, Zomato is available in more than 24 countries like UAE, Sri Lanka, the UK, Indonesia, and others. In 2011, Deepinder Goyal and Pankaj Chaddah decided to rename it Zomato from Foodiebay.
