India is hosting the 18th annual G20 Summit 2023 in the national capital Delhi on 9th-10th Sept’23. The event is being held in the newly constructed Bharat Mandapam Convention Centre located at Pragati Maidan. Earlier, amidst the preparations, Delhi went through a stunning transformation. The city has been adorned with vivid lights to create a mesmerizing ambiance.
On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered his inaugural address at the Bharat Mandapam, saying, “It was in the spirit of ‘sabka saath’ that India proposed permanent membership for the African Union in the G20. I believe that we all agree on this proposal.” and then welcomed the Chairperson of the African Union, Azali Assoumani, to join the other G20 leaders.

Hosting an event of such a great magnitude involves significant expenses related to security, infrastructure, logistics, and other arrangements to ensure the successful gathering of world leaders.
The G20 presidency was allotted 990 crore in the February budget for 2023-24. However, it has been reported that 4,100 crore, or four times the amount originally planned, was spent on the two-day event.
Let’s take a closer look at the financial commitments made by previous host countries for hosting the G20 summit.
1. Indonesia (2022) – 364 Crore INR
The 2022 G20 Summit in Bali was reportedly budgeted at around 674 billion Indonesian Rupiah, or more than 364 crore.

2. Japan (2019) – 2660 Crore INR
Japan spent $320 million, or Rs. 2,660 crore, on the 2019 G20 Summit in Osaka, according to data tweeted by ‘The World Ranking’ on X.
3. Argentina (2018) – 931 Crore INR
According to sources, the 2018 G20 conference in Buenos Aires, Indonesia, cost $112 million (about Rs. 931 crore).
4. Germany (2017) – 642 Crore INR
According to Germany’s official G20 website, the government spent €72.2 million (about Rs. 642 crore) on hosting the meeting in Hamburg.
5. China (2016) – 1.9 Lakh Crore INR
Hangzhou, China, hosted the 2016 G20 Summit. According to The Economist, the cost of hosting the event was a striking $24 billion, or more than 1.9 lakh crore (roughly).

6. Australia (2014) – 2653 Crore INR
According to a fact sheet by the University of Toronto, the 2014 summit cost AUD 400 million for hosting and AUD 100 million for security, for a total of AUD 500 million, or about 2,653 crore.
7. Russia (2013) – 170 Crore INR
The 2013 G20 Saint Petersburg Summit cost roughly RUB 2 billion, or around 170 crore as reported according to a fact sheet by the University of Toronto.
8. France (2011) – 712 Crore INR
The fact sheet by the University of Toronto stated, the 2011 G20 Summit held at Cannes ended up costing over EUR 80 million (around 712 crore).
9. Canada (2010) – 4351 Crore INR
According to sources, Canada spent CAD 715 million, approximately 4,351 crore, on the G20 Toronto meeting in 2010.
