This year’s Premier League is a competitive contest yet again with the season’s opening stages seeing top teams such as Liverpool and Chelsea struggle to win consistently.

Both sides were expected to challenge at the top and very well still could with the season being at such an early stage and the teams returning after a three-week break from league fixtures following the international break.

This break afforded to both sides could allow Jurgen Klopp and new Chelsea coach Graham Potter crucial time to rethink.

In the German coach’s case, he needed to find a way to freshen up his side, with many opposition teams knowing how to combat Liverpool’s style of play.

Liverpool’s poor start has left them +6000 outsiders in Paddy Power football betting on the outright Premier League win this season.

Manchester City are unsurprisingly the leading favourites in Paddy Power’s football betting tips at -300 and will be the team Liverpool have to chase.

Liverpool have been heavily reliant on key players for whom they have not had adequate replacements, seen in the case of Thiago Alcantara, as well as Joel Matip. Joe Gomez is a decent replacement but not as dominant as the Cameroonian is against attackers.

Klopp’s side have also been poor defensively even when their first-choice defenders have been available, which was seen in their opening UEFA Champions League group game against Napoli when Liverpool conceded three to the Italian side in the first half.

Chelsea’s case is somewhat the opposite of the Reds. The West London side have struggled to score goals while the Merseyside team has struggled to keep a clean sheet this season.

Former manager Thomas Tuchel struggled to determine the best fit for the number nine role within his squad and opted to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang whom he had managed in the past at Borussia Dortmund.
However, the German coach would only manage the Gabonese forward for a single game in the Champions League in an embarrassing loss to Dinamo Zagreb. Tuchel was sacked the following day.

Graham Potter will bring fresh ideas but a similar system in terms of structure to the formation that Tuchel’s Chelsea played.

Potter has shown at Brighton and Hove Albion that he is extremely capable of coaching a strong defence and with lesser players; with the likes of Kalidou Koulibaly and Thiago Silva he will surely be a huge success at Chelsea.

If Potter and Klopp are to quickly improve their teams form and mount a title challenge they will not only have to challenge City but with Mikel Arteta’s high-flying Arsenal side also.

Arsenal have started the season convincingly avoiding any setbacks against lesser opposition which was what cost them a place in the top four last season.

Chelsea and Liverpool both need to focus on building a solid run of form and breaking into the Champions League spots before they can seriously think about still challenging for the title this season.

Pep Guardiola’s side will surely lead the pack once again, but perhaps Liverpool or Chelsea could turn around their form to mount a fight, or there could even be an unlikely underdog winner in the form of the Gunners.
