Many Indian artists left Indian citizenship for personal as well as professional reasons. However, not many are aware that there are a handful of foreign artists who, after embracing the Indian industry, also came to embrace India as a country. Among them is legendary singer Adnan Sami. Born a Pakistani, he had long since embraced India; however, in 2016, he actually became an Indian citizen. Not only did he take citizenship, but he also actively raised his voice for India and Indians.
He supported his new home when the Pahalgam terror attack happened, while also openly criticizing his former homeland, Pakistan, for harboring terrorists. Not only this, but also openly criticized the Pakistani army and ISI for brainwashing youth to join religiously motivated terrorist groups. While Indians can’t stop themselves from loving him more, he always attracted hate from his former country. Pakistanis, over time, expressed hate towards him for embracing Indian citizenship while leaving Pakistan all at once. Now, Adnan Sami has responded to such criticism, equating Pakistani trolls with obsessive and jealous ex-lovers.

Adnan Sami says Pakistani trolls act like obsessive and jealous exes
Trolls from Pakistan frequently accuse Adnan Sami of betraying his country. In response, Adnan recently said that those who have not moved on spread negativity, likening this animosity to “ex-lover syndrome.” In an interview with Bollywood Bubble, he said,

It’s like—it’s like an ex-lover. It’s a good analogy. You know, when an ex-lover sees you moving on and getting involved with somebody else, they’ll always come up with reasons to hate you. But the real reason they do that is because they still haven’t gotten over you, and it’s love—it’s still love. And love manifests in many absurd ways. You could even say… but the point is, I understand, somewhere, the psyche of how they feel.
He added,
It is ridiculous for anyone from anywhere to presume that they know what the reasons were behind it. There were solid reasons. At the end of the day, you can argue and say, ‘People are migrating all over the world all the time. Why don’t they have issues with them?’ First of all, because of the geopolitical nature between India and Pakistan, there is a rivalry between the two for whatever reason. But more than that, it is the ex-lover syndrome.
Adnan Sami reveals why he left Pakistan
Furthermore, Adnan Sami clarified that his choice was personal and motivated by the poor treatment he received from the Pakistani government, not the general public. Even though he was a well-known artist, Pakistan never gave him recognition, and he now happily calls India his home and keeps making music without limits. Speaking about this, he said,

My issues have always been with the Pakistani government. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. However, let me make it very clear, my audience and people over there have always been very loving. And they still are, and I love them very much even today. I’m very grateful to them for all the love that they’ve given me. For an artist, the biggest nourishment is love. So, from whichever corner of the world they get that love, they will be very grateful for it. My music is for everybody. I have not put any boundaries on my music. You want to listen to it? Most welcome. You don’t want to? Thanks for trying.
What actually led Adnan Sami to choose Indian citizenship over Pakistani?
In a recent emotional interview with India TV, Adnan talked about the hardships that drove him to flee Pakistan and start over in India. People believed he was done in 1998 when he was getting constant failures. Depressed, Adnan Sami contacted the renowned vocalist Asha Bhosle during this emotional low point. Following their collaboration on ‘Kabhi To Nazar Milao,’ Adnan requested if they might record together once more, this time in London.
Adnan Sami was considering London because he had some acquaintances there. However, Asha Bhosle had other ideas. Instead, she suggested that he move to Mumbai.

That advice proved to be life-changing for him. RD Burman even offered Adnan a room in his home, which he referred to as a “temple for any musician.” From then on, everything was different. In India, songs that were unheard of in Pakistan, such as Lift Karadey, Bheegi Bheegi Raaton Mein, and Kabhi To Nazar Milao, gained enormous fame. Speaking about this, he said,
The way people embraced me and loved me, I could’ve never imagined it.
Since then, Adnan Sami has been in India and is living like a peaceful Indian. What do you think about his love for India? Do share your thoughts with us in the comment section of this article.
