With packed theatres and strong word of mouth, Border 2 has reignited interest in the iconic franchise. This renewed buzz has also led fans to revisit the original Border and its making. The budget of the 1997 Border was just Rs 12 crore

The original Border, released on June 13, 1997, went on to become one of the most iconic war films in Bollywood. Directed and produced by J.P. Dutta, the movie was based on the real-life Battle of Longewala during the 1971 Indo-Pak war. What’s truly surprising is that this epic tale of courage and patriotism was made on a modest budget of just Rs 12 crore – a far cry from the whopping Rs 275 crore spent on Border 2.

Despite its relatively low budget, Border boasted a star-studded ensemble cast including Sunny Deol, Suniel Shetty, Jackie Shroff, Akshaye Khanna, Sudesh Berry, and Puneet Issar. Sunny Deol’s portrayal of Major Kuldip Singh Chandpuri became legendary, while the film’s focus on bravery, sacrifice, and brotherhood struck a chord with audiences across the country.

The plot centered on a small group of Indian soldiers holding their post against overwhelming odds, blending intense action with emotional depth. Add to that a memorable soundtrack, and you have a film that not only became a box-office hit but also cemented its place in cinematic history. Revealing the OG Border’s budget really puts Border 2’s Rs 275 crore scale into perspective—and it makes the journey of this franchise even more fascinating!

Border vs Border 2 cast fees, a clear gap across decades

The difference in cast fees between Border (1997) and Border 2 (2026) highlights how dramatically Bollywood economics have changed. In the original film, Sunny Deol, who played the lead, was paid Rs 1.2 crore, while Jackie Shroff earned Rs 11 lakh and Tabu received Rs 20 lakh. Akshaye Khanna, in only his second film, was paid Rs 14 lakh. Suniel Shetty earned Rs 6 lakh, Puneet Issar Rs 10 lakh, Sudesh Berry Rs 4 lakh, Kulbhushan Kharbanda Rs 6 lakh, Pooja Bhatt Rs 1 lakh, and Rakhi Gulzar was reportedly paid Rs 70,000.

In contrast, Border 2 operates on a completely different scale. Sunny Deol, returning to the franchise, is said to have taken home a massive Rs 50 crore. Varun Dhawan and Diljit Dosanjh reportedly charged between Rs 8–10 crore each for their roles. While the exact fees of Ahan Shetty, Sonam Bajwa, Mona Singh and Medha Rana have not been disclosed, they are believed to have received substantial paycheques, underlining the sharp jump in star remuneration over nearly three decades.

Border 2 smashes box office records within days of release

Border 2 has stormed the box office, leaving even the original Border far behind in just its opening days. While the 1997 classic earned around Rs 65 crore worldwide, the sequel has already raked in an impressive Rs 183.36 crore in just five days. Its explosive start was boosted by strong weekend turnout and a massive Republic Day audience, making it one of the fastest-grossing war dramas in recent times.

Amid its strong box office run, the film has also faced hurdles overseas, as reports suggest it failed to secure a theatrical release in six Gulf countries over concerns linked to its alleged anti-Pakistan narrative. The makers, however, are yet to comment officially on the development.
