Zomato’s functioning can often leave customers scratching their heads. From inconsistent delivery charges to mysteriously fluctuating food prices. While many simply shrug it off and switch to alternatives, not everyone chooses silence. One such customer recently took to social media to call out Zomato for bizarrely hiking the prices of food items during a promotional offer. His post quickly went viral, prompting Zomato to respond.
Man slams Zomato for hiking prices in the name of Promotion
The whole idea behind a promotional offer is to attract customers by lowering the prices of products or services. People expect to see discounts and better deals during these promotions, which is what usually draws them to choose one platform over another. Whether it’s food delivery, shopping, or travel , the word “promotion” signals savings and value for money.

However, a man named Vishal Thakker had a completely different experience. He took to social media to express his disappointment with Zomato, claiming that the platform was actually charging more during a promotional offer. In his post, he shared screenshots showing that the price of a Vada Pav from “Kadak by Kachoriwala” had jumped from Rs 40 to Rs 99, similarly, the price of Pyaaz Kachori jumped from Rs 65 to Rs 99, all under the tag of a promotion.
Surprised by this strange pricing strategy, he tagged @zomatocare and @zomato on X (formerly Twitter) and asked,
“How can you increase prices for promotion?”

By this reply they tried to indicate that they were taking the matter seriously.
Soon after, Zomato followed up with another comment, informing that the issue had been resolved. They wrote,

On the flip side, platforms like Zomato have always been accused of first inflating the base prices of food items and then applying a “discount” on the increased price. This makes the discount look bigger than it actually is, and customers end up paying the amount close to or even more at times, in comparison to the original price.
However, in this case of promotional offer there of course was a glitch and that is why the prices appeared hiked. Platforms like these are otherwise very careful to show the prices in a manner that is only attract the customers, never prompt them to post such tweets. Their prompt response suggested that either a pricing glitch had occurred or that the backlash was enough to push them to make a quick correction.
