Food delivery giant Zomato’s name is once again in the spotlight after a delivery partner highlighted an alleged disparity between delivery charges collected from customers and the amount paid to delivery partners.

A delivery partner took to X (formerly Twitter) and called out Zomato for the alleged disparity between delivery charges

The post included two screenshots. The first showed Zomato charging Rs 31 as a delivery fee from a customer for a 1.6 km order. The second showed only Rs 20 being paid to the delivery partner for a similar 1.9 km distance. This raises questions about the fairness and transparency of Zomato’s payment structure.

Zomato responded to the post, urging the delivery partner to share his ID

Zomato Care responded to the delivery agent by saying that they understand his problem and asked him to share his FE ID in DM.

Namaste, hum aapki chinta ko samajhte hain. Please apni FE ID ko DM mein share karein taki hum isse check kr sakein. (Hello, we understand your concern. Please share your FE ID in a DM so that we can check this for you.)

This complaint alleges inconsistent earnings, a lack of transparency in the payout system, and declining incentives over time. There have been previous instances where the delivery partners have expressed frustrations about the reduction in per-order earnings despite increasing order volumes and fuel prices.

The user replied to Zomato’s post by saying that he fears that if he shares his FE ID, the food delivery app might block it.

Sirf meri Chinta ki baat nhi h ye sbb partners k saath aisa hi ho rha h… customer se lene k time p aapka per km rate alag hota h aur delivery partner ko dene k time p alag…
Aur FE Id maang rhe ho…vo bta di aapko to Id bnd krdoge taaki dobara kuch na bol sku (“With due respect, this isn’t just about me — many delivery partners are facing the same issue. The per-kilometer rate you charge customers is different from what is paid to delivery partners, which feels unfair. Also, asking for my FE ID makes me concerned, as there have been instances where IDs were blocked after raising genuine concerns. I hope you understand where I’m coming from.”)

This controversy adds to the growing scrutiny around gig economy practices in India, where workers often face precarious conditions and limited bargaining power.
