In the last decade, India has witnessed an explosion in the usage of food ordering platforms, all thanks to smartphones. Platforms like Zomato and Swiggy have revolutionized the way urban consumers access food. Without going anywhere, individuals are able to receive access to a range of cuisines, from fine dining to affordable street food, at their doorstep. And yet, with so much convenience, there’s an unseen cost.
You must have noticed that prices on those platforms tend to be higher than in the restaurants themselves. When you include platform fees, delivery fees, and packaging costs, the total usually exceeds the dine-in pricing by a significant amount. In a similar vein, one of the Swiggy customers recently took to social media to complain about being charged not only a ‘rain fee’ but also Goods and Services Tax (GST) on it. Yes, that’s not a made-up story, but that actually happened with someone. The firm has now replied to the grievances.

The customer alleges that Swiggy is levying extra GST on the platform’s rain fee
Recently, a Swiggy user named Ratnadeep opened up about an unusual incident that happened with him on Swiggy. He recently ordered steamed rice with chicken Hyderabadi masala from the Dawat-e-Zaika restaurant. Since it is the rainy season, a rain fee was also applied to his bill along with the Goods and Services Tax (GST). However, he was shocked to find out that the platform has also levied the GST on the rain fee.

While attempting to place an order of Rs 134, the customer noticed that Swiggy had added a Rs 25 rain tax, a charge levied during inclement weather. The addition of GST to the rain fee, together with the usual restaurant GST, increased the total due amount to Rs 185.
In his post, he shared screenshots of the bill and wrote:

Though Swiggy emphasized that the move is a compliance measure, the incident has sparked further concern among customers about the growing amount of additional costs charged by food delivery services. Opponents argue that such expenses add significantly to the final payment, frequently leaving customers overcharged even with discount subscription options like Swiggy One.
