Ranveer Allahbadia’s controversial joke sparked controversy and widespread outrage

The controversy that has brought India’s Got Latent to the limelight erupted after YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia made an inappropriate joke about parents and sex while appearing as a guest on the show. “I shouldn’t have said what I said on India’s got latent. I’m sorry. My comment wasn’t just inappropriate, it was not even funny. Comedy is not my forte, I am just here to say sorry.”

He then added,

“Obviously this is not how I wish to use it. I am not going to give any context or justification or reasoning behind whatever happened. I am just here for an apology. I personally had a lapse in judgement. It wasn’t cool on my part. The podcast is watched by people of all ages, I don’t want to be the kind of person that takes that responsibility lightly and family is the last thing I would ever disrespect.”

He concluded by saying,

“I promise to just get better. I have asked the makers of the video to remove the insensitive sections from the video and all I can say in the end is I am sorry. I hope you can forgive me as a human being.”

However, his apology has done little to calm the outrage, as the issue has now turned into a larger debate on freedom of speech and the limits of comedy.

The situation has taken a serious turn now as the Maharashtra Cyber Police registered an FIR under the Information Technology Act. Authorities have sent notices to Ranveer Allahbadia, along with other guests and judges who appeared in previous episodes of India’s Got Latent. The police have also ordered the show’s creators to remove all 18 episodes from social media.

Furthermore, investigations suggest that past episodes contained vulgar and obscene language, that has added to the controversy. As a result, not only is Ranveer in trouble, but the show’s host, Samay Raina, and its entire creative team are now facing legal scrutiny.
