By trading cotton and opium for tea, the Parsis brought gara embroidery to India. These Gara sarees were created by artists who were inspired by Chinese ceramics and antiquities to create elaborate floral and fauna designs. Originally entirely embroidered, the patterns changed as Parsi women traveling to China added borders and empty areas for practicality.

As Bombay’s Parsi community grew, the gara sarees began to represent wealth and individuality. Among the most well-known designs seen in Gara embroidery is “Cheena Cheeni,” which shows a Chinese woman and man against a variety of backgrounds. Additional motifs include “Marga Margi,” which depicts a hen and rooster, and “onion potato,” which is a polka-dot design.
