Viral paneer test at celebrity restaurants creates buzz on social media, Gauri Khan’s Torii failed the test

Social media never fails to surprise us. From dance challenges to bizarre food combinations, something new is always trending. In one such recent incident, a 19-year-old influencer named Sarthak Sachdeva took the internet by storm with his viral iodine test experiment. With over 5 lakh followers on Instagram, Sarthak decided to check the quality of paneer served at some of the most talked-about celebrity restaurants.

The test, which involves using iodine to detect the presence of starch in paneer, quickly caught everyone’s attention. Fake or adulterated paneer often contains starch, and this simple test helps spot the difference. Sarthak visited multiple high-end restaurants owned by Bollywood stars to find out if the paneer they serve is real. His journey began at Virat Kohli’s One8 Commune, where he ordered their popular paneer chawal. Fortunately, the paneer passed the test, proving its authenticity.

Next, he visited Shilpa Shetty’s Bastian and Bobby Deol’s Someplace Else—both restaurants also passed the iodine test, suggesting that their paneer is not adulterated. However, the real twist came when he reached Gauri Khan’s newly launched restaurant, Torii.

Soon after the reel went viral, official handle of Torii Mumbai also reacted to it

Soon after the video started gaining attention online, Gauri Khan’s restaurant, Torii, stepped in to clarify the situation. The official Instagram handle of the restaurant responded to the viral post in the comment section. They explained that the iodine test only detects the presence of starch, not whether the paneer is real or fake.

“The iodine test reflects the presence of starch, not the authenticity of the paneer.”

According to them, the dish in question contains soy-based ingredients, which could have caused the reaction seen in the test. Torii stood by the quality of their food, adding that their paneer and ingredients are completely pure and trustworthy.

“As the dish contains soy-based ingredients, this reaction is expected. We stand by the purity of our paneer and the integrity of our ingredients at Torii.”

‘To this, influencer Sarthak Sachdeva gave a light-hearted reply.

“So am I banned now? BTW your food is amazing.”

The iodine test helps identify fake or adulterated paneer by detecting added starch, which is not present in pure paneer. If the paneer turns blue or black after adding iodine, it means starch has been added, indicating that the paneer is not pure and may be fake or adulterated.
