Indigo Airlines is one of the best low-cost airlines in India. A large number of people travel from it every day. On 5 August 2025, the incident came to light when a passenger travelling on an IndiGo flight shared the post on X. In the post, he claimed that IndiGo Airlines is overcharging its passengers by making uncertain baggage weights. He added that his bag showed 18 kg on one weighing belt, while 16 kg on another, and 15 kg on the other weighing belt. Let’s check out the whole story:
A man criticizes IndiGo Airlines for their inconsistent baggage weighing belts
The viral post on X was shared by Rattan Dhillon, who was travelling from Goa to Chandigarh. He referred to these uncertain weighing scales as an “unnoticed scam” that many people don’t even think about.
“One of the biggest unnoticed scams by IndiGo is the inconsistent weighing scales at their check-in counters.”
He further wrote that when he boarded his flight 6E724 from Goa to Chandigarh yesterday, the first weighing belt showed his bag was 18 kg, then on the next one it showed 16 kg, and on the third one it showed 15 kg. After noticing this difference, he questioned the IndiGo staff, who told him that the one showing 15 kg weight is wrong and the actual weight of your bag is 18 kg. For that, he had to pay Rs 11,900 for extra baggage along with Rs 1,500 for the umbrella.

After reaching home, he weighed his bag to check, and it proved that the bag was actually 15 kg. The IndiGo weighing belts are showing different weights, allowing them to overcharge their customers for the extra baggage even if they do not have it. He also wishes IndiGo to be held accountable for it.

“Yesterday, while boarding flight 6E724 from Goa to Chandigarh, my bag showed 18 kg on one belt, 16 kg on another, and 15 kg on a third. When I questioned the discrepancy, the IndiGo staff simply replied, “Sir, the 15 kg machine must be wrong, 18 is the correct weight.” Seriously? What’s the justification for this? I ended up paying ₹11,900 for extra baggage including ₹1,500 just for carrying an umbrella! (Receipt Nos: VYU6U-02, Z8GZTD-02) To verify, I even weighed the same bag at my hotel and it was exactly 15 kg proving that their belts inflate the weight by 2-3 kg. This is nothing less than daylight robbery, and passengers are being ripped off without realizing it. IndiGo must be held accountable for this fraud.”

IndiGo Airlines denies the man’s claims, saying, “No Discrepancies Were Found.”
IndiGo Airlines replied to a post, saying they tried to reach him, but they are unable to connect. They assure him that all the weighing belts are maintained by the airport authority and regularly checked. After his post, they checked everything again, and “No Discrepancies Were Found.” They also said that the total baggage of their family of three was 52 kg, which is 7 kg more than permissible. So, they were charged only for the 7kg extra baggage.
“Mr. Dhillon, we tried reaching on the registered contact number but were unable to connect. We would like to reassure you that all baggage weighing scales are maintained, routinely calibrated and certified by the airport authorities to ensure accurate readings. As part of our due diligence, we also conducted an internal review in coordination with the airport team, and no discrepancies were found with the equipment used during your check-in. The total checked-in baggage for you and your co-travellers was 52 kg across three passengers. In accordance with our Conditions of Carriage, this exceeded the permissible limit by 7 kg, for which the applicable excess baggage charges were levied. We truly appreciate your understanding and cooperation. ~Team IndiGo”

Netizens’ reaction to this incident
Several people reacted to this incident; some of them had faced the same incident while travelling on IndiGo Airlines, while some are supporting Rattan against IndiGo Airlines.
This is infuriating but not surprising. Airlines have turned baggage fees into pure profit centers. The fact that their own scales can’t agree should be grounds for refunding every overweight charge. Keep that hotel receipt – might be worth disputing with your bank.

For that price, you could have bought two tickets , taking two people for free, and get another 15kg baggage allowance. It is that lopsided the baggage fees are. They are plundering the public with excess baggage fees. @IndiGo6E is the worst.

Faced the same issue while traveling from Kolkata to Mumbai. One counter showed 17 kg, another showed 14. When I asked, they insisted the higher one was “accurate”. It’s frustrating how common this seems to be. @IndiGo6E, this needs fixing.

Ask for the latest weighing scare calibration certificate for each of the machines
They will get into trouble 🤣🤣🤣— Logically Correct ! (@RajivKalra18) August 5, 2025
All commercial weighing scales should have a valid calibration from NABL accredited lab. It should be made mandatory to show a calibration record and validity sticker on each scale.
Airline weighing scales, including those used on all Airports Authority of India (AAI) airports,…

I’ve got stories about IndiGo. I fell into the same trap. Worse, they wouldn’t let us bring duty-free alcohol on a domestic (technically connecting) flight (Mumbai to Kolkata). I had to buy a bag at the airport and pay extra baggage fees. What a disgraceful airline.@IndiGo6E
