In today’s world, polyandry is often seen as a relic of the past, believed to be no longer practiced. However, the news of two brothers from Himachal Pradesh’s Hatti community marrying the same woman proved otherwise, sparking intense curiosity and debate. The story spread like wildfire across social media, drawing both fascination and criticism. The brothers finally broke their silence, responding to the online trolling.
Hatti community brothers defends marriage citing centuries-old Hatti tradition
Two brothers from Himachal Pradesh’s Hatti tribe recently made headlines after marrying the same woman, a practice that many believe no longer exists in modern times. The news spread rapidly on social media, sparking curiosity, debate, and a wave of online trolling. While some found the custom unusual, others mocked the brothers, questioning their choice.

However, the brothers, Pradeep Negi and his brother Kapil Negi from Thindo village in the Shillai region have now spoken out to set the record straight. Through their Facebook page, they explained that their marriage to Sunita, a woman from the nearby Kunhat village, was not only done with full consent but also rooted in an age-old tradition called Joridar Pratha. Pradeep, who works in the Jal Shakti department, said,
“Joridar pratha has been practised for centuries and will continue. It’s not unique to our village. It exists in neighbouring Uttarakhand’s Jaunsar-Bawar region too.”
The brothers also made it clear that their relationship was entirely voluntary.
“Our marriage was a mutual decision. Our family agreed, we agreed, and no one in our village has a problem.”
By saying so, Pradeep stressed that the wedding, held between July 12 and 14, was performed in accordance with local rituals and customs.

Hatti brothers responded to online trolling with strong message
After their marriage went viral, the Hatti brothers faced a barrage of trolling and abusive comments on social media. Addressing the criticism, Pradeep Negi urged people to show respect while expressing their opinions. He said,
“When you use abusive language, remember you have mothers, sisters, and daughters too. We are happy in our lives and living with joy. You are not actually abusing us, you’re abusing them.”
With his words he tried making an emotional appeal to their critics. Pradeep further emphasised that they feel no shame in their choice, as it reflects the identity and traditions of the Hatti community.
He said they have “promoted their culture” through this marriage and encouraged others to take pride in their own heritage as well.
Hatti brothers conclude message with gratitude and clarification
Wrapping up their response, the Hatti brothers expressed gratitude to those who had stood by them amid the wave of online criticism. They made it clear that their marriage was never about seeking attention or fame. Kapil explained,
“We had no intention of creating a Facebook page or becoming famous. This was destined by God. We married like any other couple, the news spread, and later people suggested we make the page.”
Kapil also spoke about the bond he shares with his brother, saying they have always lived with “love and affection,” and that marrying one woman was a way to preserve their closeness.

By ending their message on a note of unity and sincerity, the brothers sought to remind people that, at its core, their decision was about family, togetherness, and honouring their cultural roots.
