Girls Can Drink Like Their Dads But Can’t Cook Like Their Moms

Some societal stigmas are so deeply rooted in the environment that it is baffling. Women are always expected to conform to the roles society perceives them to play. If you have watched the Bollywood movie Cocktail then you must surely remember Deepika Padukone’s role.

In the film, Deepika Padukone‘s character Veronica was portrayed as a very bold, outspoken one, exactly what people would call “too much”. She used to drink like a fish and had clothes all over her floor. Although she made a decent living, she wasn’t really the stereotypical gharelu aurat. To be more likable and desirable for Gautam and his mother Veronica had to tone down her actual “too much” self a little. She was seen wearing salwars and kurtas, dedicating time for poojas, trying her hands at the laundry, and cooking biriyani to win Gautam’s heart.

Recently, a tweet throwing shade at women drinking nowadays has gathered attention on Twitter

This idea of women being docile is fed to the audience so as to be more desirable and loved for ages. A woman has to fit into the ‘sanskaari’ stereotype: cook, clean, wear traditional clothes, don’t be loud, don’t drink, be soft-spoken and the list goes on. This idea is so etched into our minds that mindless jokes about loud or opinionated women are normalized.

A guy on Twitter wrote that women nowadays can drink like their dads but can’t cook like their moms.

Here is how women reacted to this sexist tweet
