Zomato Responds After Delivery Agent Exposes Company For Extremely Low Payouts

Zomato has once again landed in the spotlight, and not for the right reasons. After repeated complaints from restaurant owners about receiving meagre payouts despite good sales, now a delivery agent has voiced similar concerns on X, complaining that Zomato paid him very little for long deliveries. The tweet, after being public, prompted an official response from Zomato.

Zomato has once again found itself in the middle of controversy after a delivery agent named Vasanth Kumar took to X and shared screenshots of his earnings, exposing the extremely low payouts given for long-distance deliveries. In his post, he directly tagged Zomato and its CEO Deepinder Goyal, writing,

“@deepigoyal @zomato @zomatocare i traveled 4.6km u gave only 23rs do u have any brain or what. Did u calculate petrol price and price u are giving in distance. have some humanity we are also human how can we lead life with this amount u gave. This is proof. Other orders amount.”

The screenshots he shared clearly show how little he was paid. In one order, he travelled 1.8 km to the restaurant and then 2.7 km to deliver the food (a total of 4.5 km), yet received only Rs 30.88. In another case, he covered nearly 4.6 km in total but earned just Rs 27.58, out of which Rs 5 was a customer’s tip, meaning Zomato itself paid him only Rs 22.58. Such figures paint a grim picture of how little delivery agents are being compensated for the effort, time, and rising fuel costs.

If we think about it practically, even an e-rickshaw driver earns much more than this for covering the same distance. For someone who depends on this as a livelihood, earning less than Rs 25–30 per trip after travelling nearly 5 km is unsustainable. Delivery agents also have to deal with traffic, weather conditions, and customer expectations, yet their basic earnings don’t even cover the cost of petrol properly.

This post clearly reflects the growing frustration among gig workers who feel exploited despite being the backbone of food delivery services.

Soon after the post was made public, Zomato came up with a generic response

Soon after Vasanth Kumar’s post went viral, Zomato came up with a response that read,

“Hi Vasanth, we understand your concern and would like to check this. Please allow us some time, and we will get back to you with an update.”

While the company did acknowledge his complaint, the reply came across as a generic customer-care style response that lacked any real assurance of change.

For an issue as serious as delivery partners struggling to make a living, such a response barely shows seriousness or empathy. Delivery agents have been raising these concerns for years, and yet the replies continue to sound like standard templates instead of concrete steps toward better pay or fair treatment. Simply “checking the issue” does little to address the larger problem of exploitation in gig work.
