Over the last decade, food delivery apps have revolutionized the way people in India and around the world eat. Earlier, we had to go to restaurants and eateries to eat something. However, with the arrival of apps such as Zomato, Swiggy, and many others, food is just a few taps away from us today. These applications have brought about an enormous change in lifestyle by fusing convenience, choice, and accessibility. Yet, the sector is not without problems.
Increasing delivery fees, raised menu prices, and billing errors have frequently resulted in customer complaints. A strange bill slip made headlines recently in Chennai. A customer who had ordered two vegetarian dishes on order from Hotel Pandian through Zomato was presented with a bill amounting to Rs 0. The absence of price information made the customer perplexed and doubt the transparency of the system. Zomato has also reacted to the same. So, let’s find out how the company responds:

The matter was brought to light when the customer posted the bill on social media, tagging Zomato and its support handle. The order, received from Hotel Pandian at Porur, had two vegetarian meal parcels as per the order. The printed receipt showed a total of Rs 0, which also included zero values for subtotal, taxable amount, and tax.
In his post, the consumer expressed amazement at the lack of documentation regarding the actual value of the meals. In his post, he wrote,
@zomatocare @zomato Hi customer care, how possible the hotel bill is received with 0.00 on it. Why they did not mention value of 2 veg meals purchased by us vide zomato. Seriously surprised to get a bill like this. #Hotel_Pandian (Porur). Kindly explain.
The receipt, which had the cashier’s signature on it, had all the charges marked as zero, leaving people questioning billing practices and transparency between delivery platforms and restaurants. The customer also asked Zomato why discrepancies happen.

How did Zomato respond to the above-mentioned query?
Upon seeing the above-mentioned tweet, Zomato rushed on X to clarify what happened. However, it seemed that the company itself did not know what went wrong with the order’s bill. So, they asked the customer for the relevant order ID to get the transaction checked as soon as possible. In its reply, the company wrote,
Hey Venkat, this does not seem right. Please share the relevant order ID with us, and we will get this checked.

Meanwhile, food ordering platforms such as Zomato have sometimes been plagued by various kinds of issues. From billing discrepancies to overcharging, people suffer so much because of companies’ mismanagement. Though this incident is atypical for demonstrating a total lack of any charges, it again reflects the necessity for better communication between delivery companions, restaurants, and diners.
