His post was aimed at questioning the transparency of Blinkit’s billing system.

To support his claim, Dr. Kumar shared a screenshot of his bill. The total value of the items he purchased was Rs 228. A delivery charge of Rs 12 and a handling charge of Rs 9 were also included, both of which he felt were acceptable. However, what caught his attention was the Rs 30 high demand surge charge, which bumped the grand total up to Rs 279.

Blinkit responds to user’s concern over surge charges

Dr. Arvind Kumar’s tweet questioning an unexplained surge charge on his Blinkit order received a direct response from the company. Although his post didn’t go viral, it was enough to prompt Blinkit’s customer care handle, BlinkitCares, to address the issue.

In their reply, Blinkit explained,

“Hi Arvind, we would like to inform you that the surge charge enables your delivery partner to make an additional effort and bring you your order at the earliest, even during less-than-ideal circumstances.”

The clarification aimed to justify the Rs 30 charge that had raised doubts in the first place.

Why platforms like Blinkit charge high surge fees

While many people notice the extra “surge charges” on their bills, few actually understand why they’re being charged. For most users, it appears as an unexplained cost, especially when there’s no visible reason like rain or traffic delays. This lack of clarity often leads to confusion or frustration.

In reality, platforms like Blinkit use surge pricing to manage several behind-the-scenes challenges. These include handling peak-hour demand, offering incentives to delivery partners, maintaining fast delivery promises, and covering rising operational costs. However, since this information is rarely communicated clearly during checkout, users are often left guessing.

Better transparency around such charges could help customers feel more informed and less taken by surprise. Knowing that the extra fee supports faster service and fair pay might shift the perception from “unnecessary” to “understandable.”
