Music has played an important role in human life for ages. It is currently one of the largest and most profitable industries in the world. From Lata Mangeshkar to AR Rahman to Arijit Singh, artists of all ages have become an immense part of our daily lives.  Nonetheless, there has been discussion in recent years about how technology has altered the conventional understanding of music.

While some artists embrace digital tools and tech-driven production, others see it as a danger to the authenticity of classical instrumentation. These distinctions between traditional and modern music have recently been brought to light once more by a dispute between two giants of the industry, Abhijeet Bhattacharya and AR Rahman.

AR Rahman hits back at Abhijeet Bhattacharya for his recent claims

In an interview with India Today following Abhijeet’s criticism, Rahman denied Abhijeet’s claims and maintained that he incorporates many musicians into his songs. He said,

It’s nice to blame me for everything. I still love Abhijeet, and I would send cakes to him. Also, it’s his opinion, and there’s nothing wrong with having one.

Rahman also refuted Abhijeet’s assertion that he is responsible for the end of live instrumentation. To prove this, he shared how he set up an orchestra of 60 women. Speaking about this, he said,

I recently set up an orchestra with 60 women in Dubai. They are being employed every month and are being paid insurance, health, and everything. In every movie that I do, be it Chhaava or Ponniyin Selvan, there are close to 200-300 musicians involved, and some songs have more than 100 people working on them. I don’t show off or post photos with them, and thus no one gets to know about it.

Rahman continued by explaining that it is crucial to use computers to create exceptional harmonies since he cannot ask musicians to play instruments and then reject their compositions. He said,

Computers are used as a tool to design extraordinary harmonies, but I can’t afford to get musicians to play and reject them later.

AR Rahman added:

The producers I work with can vouch for how many musicians are involved in the process.

When Abhijeet Bhattacharya blames AR Rahman for popularizing technology-driven music

In an interview with ANI, Abhijeet severely criticized Rahman for popularizing technology-based music. He added that the composer was the one who pushed the industry to abandon live performers. ANI quoted Abhijeet saying,

Baaki jo filmon mein musicians bajate the, woh ab berozgar hain — mostly thanks to Mr. Rahman. Unhone sabko bataya ki koi zarurat nahin musician ki… sab kuch laptop par ho sakta hai.

Apart from this, Abhijeet has also slammed the increasing use of AI in the music industry.  He added,

Rahman sahab ne bol diya ki jitna kamayenge sirf mai kamaunga. Musicians ki zaroorat nhi hai.

When Abhijeet Bhattacharya expressed dissatisfaction with AR Rahman’s unconventional working methods

The above-mentioned instance is not the first time that both singers clashed with each other. Earlier in January 2025, singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya talked candidly about his one and only collaboration with AR Rahman on the song “Ae Nazneen Suno.” Speaking about this, Abhijeet openly voiced his displeasure with Rahman’s nontraditional working techniques, describing a disorganized procedure that conflicted with his own methodical approach.

During an interview with Bollywood Thikana, Abhijeet explained why their partnership only lasted one song. He said,

I decided I couldn’t wait indefinitely, so I suggested recording in the morning. But then, at 2 am, I got a call to come to the studio. Am I crazy? I told them I was asleep. The next morning, when I went to the studio, he wasn’t there.

He added,

Now, in the name of creativity, if you say that you will record at 3:33 am, I don’t get it.

Meanwhile, on the professional front, AR Rahman is scheduled to compose for Aamir Khan’s production Lahore 1947. He is also working on Aanand L. Rai’s Tere Ishq Mein and Mani Ratnam’s Thug Life. Apart from this, he is set to collaborate with world-renowned Hans Zimmer for Ramayan, an epic movie produced by Nitish Tiwari.
