The case of the missing Indore couple in Shillong has garnered a lot of attention in recent days. However, this whole fiasco now comes to a dramatic conclusion after 16 days of searching and a number of unresolved puzzles. Sonam Raghuvanshi, the wife, turned herself in to the Uttar Pradesh Police in Ghazipur early on Monday. Two weeks after her husband’s body was discovered deep within a gorge in the Cherrapunji area, the wife, who had ‘gone missing’ since May 23 in Shillong, turned herself in.

A top Meghalayan police official informed India Today TV that Sonam ordered an attack on her husband when they were on their honeymoon. It’s all because she was supposedly having an affair with someone named Raj Kushwaha. The motive behind this chilling crime gave a new layer to this already hyper-hyped case. However, due to this, an old meme has gone viral, and it’s also about ‘Sonam.’ By now, you might have guessed which meme I am talking about.

‘Sonam Bewafa Hai’ meme is again trending after Sonam Raghuwanshi exposed

Following Sonam’s arrest, social media users have drawn attention to the connection, reviving an old internet meme trend. The saying Sonam Gupta Bewafa Hai, which translates to “Sonam Gupta is unfaithful,” went widespread on social media in August 2016 after a picture of a Rs 10 note bearing the phrase was shared.

The message was allegedly written by a betrayed lover. After it went viral on social media, it was copied by others. Later on, officials issued advice to avoid spoiling the banknotes. Even after so many years, it is still unclear who the original rejected partner and the now-infamous Sonam Gupta are. Many people think she might not even be real.

Nevertheless, as another went viral recently, the meme has again gained traction on social media. Have a look at some of the reactions:

What exactly happened in the Sonam Raghuvanshi-related case?

In Indore, 29-year-old Raja Raghuvanshi married 27-year-old Sonam Raghuvanshi. Following their nuptials, the newlyweds took a plane to Meghalaya for their honeymoon. They arrived in Shillong and spent the evening at the Balaji Guest House. After parking their rented scooter when they arrived in Mawlakhiyat on May 22, the pair climbed more than 3,000 stairs to see the renowned living root bridges.

After leaving the homestay, the couple set out on their return hike without a guide. Albert spotted them again at around ten in the morning, this time accompanied by three men who spoke Hindi. This was Raja’s final known sighting.

However, soon they went missing, and their abandoned scooter was discovered outside a café on May 24. The police received a tip about an abandoned scooter from the head of Sohrarim village. Police confirmed the following day that the pair had leased the scooter, and they stepped up their hunt for them. At first, though, it produced no results.

Although his friends and relatives hoped that network problems were the cause of the couple’s inability to be reached, all hopes were shattered on June 2 when Raja’s body was recovered. By that time, Sonam’s whereabouts are still unknown.

How did police crack this complex case?

In order to reconstruct the timeline, police also gathered testimony and CCTV footage that showed the couple arriving at a homestay on May 22.

According to a witness, he saw the couple and three men ascending the steep stairs from Nongriat to Mawlakhiat at around ten in the morning on May 23. He had approached them the day before, offering to show them the way to the living root bridge in Nongriat, so he recognized them. But they have turned down his offer and gone with another guide instead.

He also mentioned that the three males who were with the couple were speaking Hindi, indicating that they were not native speakers. On June 9, Meghalaya DGP I. Nongrang acknowledged Sonam’s surrender at Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh. Overnight operations led to the arrest of three persons suspected of committing the murder.
