On Tuesday, 20th May, General Asim Munir, Pakistan’s Army Chief, was promoted to the rank of Field Marshal. According to an official statement, the decision to promote Gen Asim Munir (Nishan-e-Imtiaz Military) was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
Reportedly, Munir became the second officer in the country’s history to attain this position due to his role in the recent conflict with India
The first officer to be elevated to Pakistan’s highest military rank was Army General Ayub Khan in 1959.

Pakistan’s prime minister’s office stated,
“The Government of Pakistan has approved the promotion of Gen Asim Munir (Nishan-e-Imtiaz Military) to the rank of Field Marshal for ensuring the security of the country and defeating the enemy based on the high strategy and courageous leadership”
The news attracted a lot of trolls targeting Munir on the Internet, and singer Adnan Sami reacted to his promotion with a video mocking him
Asim Munir was trolled by the netizens on social media for “promoting himself”. This is in relation to the military chief calling the shots in Pakistan through the public imagery of a PM and a government.
Singer Adnan Sami also took to X and shared a video clip from an old Bollywood movie, taunting Asim Munir. The video clip displays a man giving a speech, to animals. He says,

Asim Munir’s promotion was announced just over a week after India and Pakistan reached a ceasefire understanding on May 10. The decision was taken to stop all military actions on land, sea, and air against each other.

Operation Sindoor was carried out by India on May 7 at terror bases in Pakistan and PoK as a retaliation for Pakistan’s Pahalgam attack. It was followed by missile strikes to counter Pakistan’s shelling and attacks in border areas. There was a heavy crossfire, and a total of 100 terrorists and 35-40 soldiers of the Pakistan Army were killed along the Line of Control (LoC). Later, a ceasefire was announced on May 12 to stop hostilities.
