India’s digital payments landscape has undergone a dramatic transformation over the past decade with the emergence of Unified Payments Interface (UPI). Launched by the National Payments Corporation of India, UPI was specifically aimed at making bank-to-bank transfers easier on mobile phones without requiring complicated account details. From paying for groceries and rent to giving donations at temples and clearing office bills, UPI has become an integral part of the lives of millions. However, with increased use, challenges and vulnerabilities related to UPI keep increasing.

One of the major and growing issues is that money is sent to the wrong UPI ID or bank account. In fact, with instant processing, even minor typos or the selection of the wrong contact can lead to irreversible transactions. Unlike the traditional banking system, where sometimes banks were able to cancel transfers, in UPI, it keeps users helpless if one sends money to the wrong number. However, not many know that there are some ways in which we can reverse the wrong payments made on UPI.

Steps people can take to reverse wrong UPI payments

When things go wrong with a UPI transaction, the efficiency and ease of use of electronic payment systems could easily turn into a source of stress. However, those who take the initiative and follow the right steps in the right manner may end up with a better result.

1. Contact the recipient as soon as possible

The first step, which is to be done immediately after recognizing the wrong UPI transfer, is to contact the beneficiary. If the contact is known or has a phone number on display, notify them calmly about the incorrect transaction and seek reimbursement. Many beneficiaries, if contacted early enough before the money leaves their bank accounts, will cooperate.

2. Report the transaction via the UPI application

Most UPI applications incorporate in-app customer support for issues regarding transactions. It would be handy if the user opened the transaction history and selected the wrong payment using the dispute or help option to report it. Filing the complaint through the app ensures the matter is officially recorded and routed to the relevant bank.

3. Inform your bank immediately

Since banks bear the burden of UPI transaction settlements, it is a critical step to inform your bank. One can dial customer care, send an email, or even pay a visit to the nearest branch with all details of the transaction. A formal complaint registered ensures that the bank begins coordination with the recipient’s bank and opens up avenues for recovery.

4. Escalate the issue to NPCI if required

If the issue remains unresolved even after reaching out to the app and the bank, users can escalate their issue on the grievance redressal system provided by NPCI. This ensures that NPCI, which manages all UPI transactions, examines it at a higher level via the transaction reference number.

1. Ensure transaction details are always readily available

Correct information is essential to track a wrong transfer effectively. Users are required to remember the UPI reference number, date, time, amount, and recipient information while making a transaction. This information ensures quick tracking by banks and payment systems to prevent delays in investigations.

2. Recognize that resolution takes time

The process of recovering money from an incorrect money transfer through UPI is not an instantaneous task. Banks normally take a few working days to examine complaints and interact with the receiving banking institution. Despite this, an earlier complaint submission enhances the processing speed of this task.

After lodging a complaint, users receive a reference or ticket number. It becomes essential for users to preserve this number, as it enables them to monitor the status and follow up with the bank concerned for delayed replies.
