A deeply disturbing incident from Agra, Uttar Pradesh, has once again highlighted how unsafe public spaces can be for women. Despite living in the 21st century, such shocking cases of harassment still surface almost daily. In this case, a government school teacher, identified as Shyamveer Singh from Mathura, was caught harassing and catcalling a young woman who had simply stopped outside an eatery near Kargil Square. What started as verbal misconduct quickly turned into a terrifying ordeal as he took out a pistol and started threatening the woman. The shocking incident took place on 20th September.

According to reports, Singh and another man approached the woman in a car and offered her “Rs 5,000 to get into the vehicle.” When she ignored them, Singh stepped out and shamelessly said, “Tumse hi keh raha hu” (I’m talking to you only). Showing immense courage, the 22-year-old woman confronted him and asked, “Ye kya badtameezi hai?” (What is this misconduct?). But instead of backing down, the accused tried to physically force her into the car, grabbing her hands in full public view.

The woman fought back bravely. She kicked him, screamed for help, and her shouts drew the attention of nearby people. Enraged and desperate, Singh escalated matters by pulling out his licensed pistol and threatening her, warning that she must go with him. Shockingly, when a bystander tried to intervene, he even pointed the weapon at him. Despite the threats, the woman continued resisting and in a moment of sheer presence of mind, managed to snatch the car keys. This only further infuriated the teacher, who then attempted to run her over while fleeing the scene.

Such an act was committed by a government school teacher, someone entrusted with shaping young minds, makes it all the more appalling.

Here is what UP Police did

Following the terrifying incident in Agra, the woman promptly registered a case at Sikandra Police Station. Agra Police confirmed that the accused, Shyamveer Singh, was arrested within 24 hours. Authorities also seized his licensed pistol and the car used during the incident. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) City, Sonam Kumar, stated that a formal letter would be issued to cancel the accused’s gun license. The police are continuing their search for his accomplice.

Agra Police shared photographic evidence of the accused behind bars on social media, captioning the tweet whose English version read,

“The accused involved in harassing a woman, threatening her with a licensed pistol, trying to force her into a car, assaulting her when she resisted, and threatening her life was promptly arrested within just 24 hours by the Sikandra Police Station, Surveillance, and SOG team. The car and licensed pistol used in the incident have been recovered. #UPPolice”
